Pro-Zionist media bias

Because this topic cries out for a thread.

Quote:
The mild pressure that President Obama is placing on Israel to curtail its settlement expansion is worth examining in light of the debate over U.S. media coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Anecdotal evidence from the last few weeks suggests an American-Israeli monopoly over media reporting. A piece published in the New York Times on July 30, for example, discusses the Israeli settlements in the West Bank through the eyes of the settlers. The story, "West Bank Settlers Send Obama a Defiant Message," fails to quote a single Palestinian, relying exclusively on Israeli settlers. The fact that the occupation of the West Bank is universally considered illegal by the international community and under international law is also absent from the piece. No admission is provided that the settlements prohibit the emergence of a contiguous Palestinian state. The settlers are only vaguely referred to as a "challenge" to peace. Although U.S. negotiator Dennis Ross is cited, his role in denying the emergence of a sovereign Palestinian state during the 2000 Camp David talks is also neglected.

Another story from the July 27 issue of Time magazine is instructive as well. Titled "Two Views of the Land," the piece allocates a mere paragraph to exploring the hardships of Palestinian families in the West Bank, while spending nine paragraphs chronicling the lives of those families who live in the settlements. The Time piece fits comfortably within a larger political debate [led by Obama] seeking only to stop the expansion of the settlements, not to dismantle them. This limitation of media debate to two options - keeping the status quo or allowing for the settlements' expansion - represents an impressive victory for U.S. and Israeli propaganda....

Many feel that pro-Israel lobbying groups exert considerable pressure on American journalists to take a pro-Israeli bias. Paul Findley's classic book They Dare to Speak Out documents various political figures that were targeted by pro-Israel groups for challenging Israel's occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Findley documents how complaints of media bias led the editors at the Washington Post to appoint a representative from a pro-Israel group to monitor reporters' conduct in the newsroom. No representative of Palestinian interests was allowed to take part in the assessment.

Does something so self-evident, at least in North America, cry out for a thread?  I guess it can't hurt.

M. Spector M. Spector's picture

Self-evident? Only to those not blinded by Zionist propaganda.

In fact, the Zionists have mounted a campaign to paint the mainstream media as biased against Israel. Try a Google search for [url=http://www.google.ca/search?q=%22anti-Israel+media+bias%22.&btnG=Search&..."anti-Israel media bias"[/url]. I get 153,000 page hits.

josh

I meant self-evident to people on this board.

M. Spector M. Spector's picture

You said "in North America" not "on this board".

You don't think there are people on this board who are pro-Zionist - who think the media are too critical of Israel? What about people who read babble but don't post here?

Jaku

Ah yes those damnable Zionists yet again

remind remind's picture

You know that someone has already sent a complaint to the HRC about this thread.

NPR's [National Public Radio in the U.S.] reporter Linda Gradstein has done it again. She has managed to take a "must report" story on Israeli-Palestinian relations - the new report by B'Tselem on the non-combatants, including children, killed by the Israeli military during the Israeli attack on Gaza - and report it in a manner which minimizes the story's potential to create opposition to Israeli treatment of Palestinians on the West Bank and Gaza.

Virtually every other published report on this story mentions the number of non-combatant children under 16 which the group B'Tselem - an Israeli human rights organization - found had been killed by the Israeli military in their most recent invasion of Gaza. Many news reports made the 320 Gaza children 16 and under who were killed the story's lead. But not Linda Gradstein; she completely omitted that piece of information.

If this was the first time Ms Gradstein had failed to report key facts which could negatively impact the opinion of US citizens about Israel we could explain it away as unintentional - the unusual slip of a seasoned reporter in failing to report the most important part of the story. But this is not an isolated incident. It has been well documented that Ms. Gradstein consistently constructs her stories on Israeli-Palestinian issues in a manner that is as favorable as possible to the position of the Israeli Government and the actions of the Israeli military. She regularly provides official Israeli positions and interpretations of events unusual deference. Furthermore, Gradstein has accepted payment for speeches to pro-Israel organizations in clear violation of NPR policy.

I am unsure of what this thread is about. Its clumsy and unfocused.

That's the funny thing about threads - unlike a painting or novel or sculpture, they're usually constructed by several independent actors not acting in consultation with one another. If you'd prefer threads where only one person posts, that could likely be accommodated - but even then, there's no guarantee of grace or focus.

In this thread, in fact, we have several posts by M. Spector clearly focused on the precise topic announced in the title, and a few other intervening briefly to question whether it's necessary to talk about this, etc. I haven't done a survey, but in my experience, this thread is probably one of the poorer candidates for the "clumsy and unfocused" award.

And the post that I am now finishing proves the point I made in my first paragraph.

Jaku

Prophit, nothing unfocused about it....it is a refrain on a similar theme "Zionism all bad all the time"...get with the story

George Victor

It was certainly "bad" in yesterday's lecture from Israel about Naomi Klein's "anti-semitism"...and she was left without time to refute it on CBC's Q.

Talk about a broken record, Jake. Up is down, left is right.  A large number of film people in Israel are onside with Naomi, but they are simply "deluded".  Outside of the confines of that tiny theocracy, one becomes anti-semitic, pure and simple. Neat.

See? Even Jaku gets it.

I think that threads likethis are more welcome on Stormfront and not Rabble.  I'm pretty sure that anti-semitism is against the rules here.  Not only that but many have been dragged before the human rights tribunal for less.  Racism is not to be tolerated.

Being against Israel's illegal occupation and belicouse relations with its neighbours is not anti-semitism

Using the language you are.  The CJC would disagree with you.  Are you denying Israels right to exist?

kropotkin1951

Are you denying the Palestinians the right to live without fear of their homes being bombed by tanks or bulldozed to make way for more settlements?  Anti-semitism is hatred of people for being Jewish. I hate Israel's occupation exactly the same as I hate the American torture camps around the world or those 9 11 pictures of the stadium full of young left wing activists.  As I said in another thread I think you have stumbled onto the wrong board so don't let the door slam you on the way out.

If one finds that the CJC disagrees with you, you're probably correct.

I deny Israel's right to exist.  I deny any state's "right" to exist.

I think that there are terrible attrocities being committed by both sides to be honest.  What exactly is Israel occupying that you feel is illegal?

For the record I honestly believe that a two state solution is the only  thing that will work and I don't understand why Israel isn't willing to discuss it in a meaning ful manner.  However at the same time Hamas and Abbas have to guaranteethat the rocket attacks into Israel will stop.

Both sides need to stop acting like this, it isn't good for anyone.

remind remind's picture

Perhaps this another thing you know little about, if you do not know what land Israel is occupying illegally?

But I doubt that, as it seems you were levelling threats up there a bit. Do you know your way around the human rights tribunal world or something? As it is not something people here and those newly coming here really bring up and make oblique threats about.

I'm trying to suggest in many threads that we ought not to engage this troll. I'm awaiting mod action.

I was hoping that's what you meant.

Nevertheless, isn't it possible that one can argue from an uninformed Zionist position yet not be a "troll"?

Reviewing your posts over the past day or two, I'm pretty sure you don't really belong here on babble.

I'll risk the wrath of babblers by making an editorial decision to let you find another forum where you'd be better suited.  Like maybe the National Post comment section or something.

What do you consider to be balanced sources on Israel and Palestine?

CBC? CNN? The BBC?

Why are we so hard on Israel?  Israel is a democracy just like the United States is a democracy!

Then again, the United States was a democracy in the 18th and 19th centuries and it had slavery.

The United States was a democracy in the 20th century when many states had legalized discrimination against black Americans.

Israel is a democracy that occupies and is colonizing the West Bank and controls the borders of Gaza.  Israel treats the local inhabitants as second class.

Israel is a democracy where its Arab Israeli citizens do not receive equitable services compared to Jewish Israelis.

But we must support the democracy of Israel.  Otherwise, we will be called, "Anti-Semitic."

Quote:

The Israel Project, a US media advocacy group, has produced a revised training manual to help the worldwide Zionist movement win the propaganda war, keep their ill-gotten territorial gains and persuade international audiences to accept that their crimes are necessary and conform to "shared values" between Israel and the civilised West.

The manual teaches how to justify the slaughter, the ethnic cleansing, the land-grabbing, the cruelty and the blatant disregard for international law and UN resolutions, and make it all smell sweeter with a liberal squirt of the aerosol of persuasive language. It is designed to hoodwink us ignorant and gullible Americans and Europeans into believing that we actually share values with the racist regime in Israel and that its abominable behaviour is therefore deserving of our support.

Israel is hoping for a PR massacre. The other side - the Palestinian Authority and the PLO - don't take communications seriously and have neglected to correct Israeli distortion. They are happy, it seems, for Israel's one-sided definitions to prevail, which of course makes the task for Israel so much easier. This latest propaganda offensive is potentially the 'coup de grace' to finish off the tormented Palestinians.

And the manual will no doubt serve as a communications primer for the army of cyber-scribblers that Israel's Ministry of Dirty Tricks is recruiting to spread Zionism's poison across the internet.

Israel will become a democracy when the 3.5 million palestinians living under its rule in Gaza and the West Bank acquire voting rights.
