Toronto’s politically charged, electronically driven LAL kick off 11 national tour dates starting July 30th, 2009, playing with major artists such as the Sam Roberts Band at BC’s Big Time Out Festival and representing the innovative Global Electronica theme at Regina’s 40th annual Folk Festival. LAL will be promoting their 3rd studio album, the acclaimed “Deportation” inspired by the events surrounding 9/11 and its fallout — the rise of a cloaked surveillance  state, thicker lines drawn around who is “legal” and who is “not,” and most particularly by the fate of several deported friends.

Deportation stands to be their most provocative and fully-realized album to date. “We wanted people to sit up and think about this word {Deportation} and what it meant, to read it aloud. So much music doesn’t provoke you to think, so it was important that we named this CD something that get people thinking,” explains lead vocalist Rozina Kazi. Deportation also hosts some of Toronto’s finest including Zaki Ibrahim, Ian Kamau, Montreal’s Moonstarr and more. Post-tour, LAL will present their new media project ‘zero cluster’ with Faisal Anwar and Jose Garcia at the Art Gallery of Ontario (August 2009/January 2010) before heading to India in September to work on their 4th record due out September 2010.

As part of their tour, the band has put out a limited edition retrospective CD sampling album favourites spanning over the course of their 10 years making music on the indie level. CD’s will be available at all locations of the following tour dates:

Biography

Vocalist and poet Rosina Kazi and producer Murr first began collaborating on music as LAL in 1998, mucking about with tons of gear and wild poetics. In the early 00s, they created two politically charged critically-acclaimed albums, Corners (2002) and Warm Belly High Power (2004), the latter earning the distinction of ‘2004’s Best Soul Album’ by Canadian music bible Exclaim! Magazine. Relentless touring across Canada and Europe and growing press attention followed, and accomplished bassist Ian de Souza joined the fray. Their 4th album, ‘Deportation’ is a personal treatise on migration and movement, a challenge to militarism, dangerous love, and the stories of those silenced by (il)legality, all threaded together with dub poetry, soul, folk, roots, jazz and a definitive dance-floor aesthetic. Their dynamic live show is a testament to the glorious exploration of the depths of humanism – building community while ripping apart words, notes, and rhythms, eyes open to the injustice that burrows deep into the fabric of society, and hearts burning with the fire for justice for all.
