In January 1991 a woman was murdered on Powell Street in Vancouver, Coast Salish Territories. Out of a sense of grief, hopelessness and anger the February 14 Women's Memorial March was ignited.

Over the objection of prisoners' groups and defense lawyers and already routine in some New York State and federal prisons, New York changed policy to permit the recording of prisoners' phone calls.
