What explains this extraordinary week, in which one person's death seems to have become such a significant moment in the life of this country?
"All my very best." That was his sign-off, and that's what Jack Layton gave to the very end. With the last of his life force, he shone a light over this whole country in that sweet, wise letter.

If Jack Layton, as Christie Blatchford opined, was "a canny, relentless, thoroughly ambitious fellow," this is no bad thing, and none of us should allow ourselves to be led into thinking it was.
