Just to give credit where it's due, all the posts by me between beluga2's suggestion and here are things I copied from the thread he linked to, I didn't create that awesome formatting myself. The authors are:
Googlymoogly
Beluga2
Googlymoogly
4t2
Which I added to the actual threads except Beluga2's because it might wreck the formatting.

Again.
[ 08 July 2005: Message edited by: Vansterdam Kid ],to test out, helpful. Anchoress, this was a great thread idea.
I edited my previous post, a bajillion times, so maybe this time I'll be able to test out font sizes properly.
It takes a little bit of fiddling. I find that copying the formatting with the quote function works well.
Through the Looking Glass? Escher would be proud.
Edited to remove the Escher effect 'cause dialup can't handle real art!

OK, that's officially the coolest thing I've ever seen!
Cool! In IE I only get a window with the text of the thread. In MZ/FF It goes down 4 levels. Kind of like when you see a mirror in a mirror, and it shows you the first mirror showing you the mirror.
Yeah, looks like IE doesn't support IFrames ... too bad, maybe they should switch to a real browser?
couldn't think of anywhere else to put this:

Well it showed up on the TAT. Nice!
GAAAAAA!!!!!!!! How deep does it GOoooooooooooo?
It's like a "'Pot O' Gold' chocolate box" posting! Problem is, when you're on a stinky ol' dial-up like me, it makes this thread interminably slow to load...
I'm gonna have to give up on this thread.
hehe ... in respect for the techno-cavemen of babble, I am going to point the frame somewhere else so the "recursion" doesn't screw them up so bad.
*whew*
Thanks, No Yards!

Yeah, I'm glad you said that earlier. And I did that. But for some reason it wasn't working on my post at 6:17am babble time -- but it worked easily on my post at 6:35am babble time. Maybe, I was just tired though.
At the risk of repeating what's been said many times above:
Cool
Thank you all.

One of these days I'll learn formatting. Or maybe I'll just open another beer.
The most important tip of all is the one that saves us from very common sidescroll problems.
If you display a very long URL in a post it can cause sidescroll.
Many get around it by displaying instead a "Tiny URL" from http://tinyurl.com/
But the easiest way to avoid sidescroll is not to display the URL at all.
Instead of using the services of "Tiny URL", simply embed the original long URL in the text of the post by creating a hotlink, thus:
Here is an example of a hotlink to Tiny URL that does not require displaying the URL at all. The URL can be as long as you like, because it doesn't show on the screen. The link will appear on screen in red, and it can be any appropriate words you choose.
To embed the URL, use the UBB code tags and around the words you want to appear in red on the screen, and insert the URL itself into the first tag immediately after the = sign.

How can you do underlining?
[ 19 January 2006: Message edited by: Krago ]
The standard UBB code for underlining is the same as for boldface, except you use a U instead of a B. I'll try it now:
This should appear underlined.
ETA: Guess what? It doesn't work! Who would have thought?
So, let's try with HTML-type angle-brackets instead of square brackets:
This should appear underlined.

How would one "center" the following cryptic (and probably quite clumsy) message? Can one, in fact?
xxx
xxxxx

xxx xxx xxxxx xxx xxx
xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx

Do you want to centre the whole thing? Or just the extended finger?

I was watching Harper on the CBC "one on one", at the same time ... you think I could live with wasting 60 minutes on *just* listening to Harper? Anyway, it was more productive than the 1st half hour of listening to Harper and picking belly button fluff.

Albireo, No Yards, Sorry, just got back to the board. I was looking for the whole thing to be centered. Thanks for asking - and trying.

Yeah, I need to add a few partitions to my harddrive WITHOUT formatting it. So windows xp, ntfs, make the existing partition much smaller (resize) and add about 5 partitions for different breeds of linux into the empty space. I never had a problem partitioning before so dont know what is the problem.

Using this thread for idle chit-chat only hastens the day when it will be closed due to unmanageable length. That would be a shame, because once the thread is closed it's not possible to examine the code used in a post (using the "" function).

Sigh. I'm never going to get all of these tricks. Here's one so basic that no one has even asked. How do I include multiple quotes, and quotes within quotes, in a posting? In deep shame, pookie

How do you pull up a list of babblers? There used to be a babbler on here with a name that meant (in Japanese?) something like that feeling you get when you first fall in love. I might be totally disremembering this one, but if I could look at a list of past members I think I could find it if it was on here.

Go to google.com and type in: site:www.rabble.ca/babble +"Polly Brandybuck" You can use this to find a past member if you know their name. If you don't know the name (and have lots of time on your hands), then type this in the address section of your browser: ht... Keep incrementing the last number by one until you find the person you want.

Ha...when I have a few days free I will do that. Sadly, I can't remember the name, I just remember that the meaning of the word was cool and that there wasn't an English equivalent.

Just wanted to reiterate, as M. Spector points out above, as it stands now, once these threads are closed it is not possible to use the quote function to see the code used. You may want to pick some of your favourite codes now and copy and paste into Notebook or some other text-only word processor. (Unless it would be possible to change it to keep the quote function in closed threads?)
