What a fun thread. Here's my info:
I was born in Saskatoon, but moved to Brandon before I was 2. I have lived here ever since, except for th 7 months that I participated in the [url=http://www.katimavik.org]Katimavik[/url] program, and the summer of 2004, when I lived in Quebec City as part of a summer work exchange program. I have lived in most Canadian provinces (excluding BC, Nova Scotia, PEI, and Newfoundland), been to all provinces excluding PEI, and none of the territories. I graduated with a geography major from [url=http://www.brandonu.ca]Brandon University[/url], and am currently finishing up a GIS Diploma from [url=http://www.assiniboine.net]Assiniboine Community College[/url]. I have been involved in local YMCA programs, been a referee for youth soccer (and hope to again), and I attend the United Church of Canada. I've also been involved with some local activist issues, for example attending an information session about BMD.

Sub lite is currently being broiled under the Aussie sunshine, being a transplant from the Canadian wet coast to the desert of South Australia. I don't know if this is intended to be serious in part. Nonetheless, I was not expecting a thread of people to post info about themselves, although it serves the purpose of my question and I did find it interesting.
I was reading the globe and mail readers comments on the SCC recent judgment on the Sikh kirpan issue and then read the thread on babble. A world of difference in intelligence for the most part. This prompted me to ask why people on babble are different. Wilf Day, while I apologize if my question created paranoia for you.

The perennial question as to What makes people left-leaning and others right-leaning. There have been many attempts to explore the "mystery". From light-hearted, simplistic and reliability-bereft use of horoscopic signs (Is it true that Libras are more likely to be left-leaning than Scorpios?) to a most recent study that claimed that people who have more daughters than sons are more likely to be left-leaning (with exceptions of some well known right-wingers well mentioned by the media that reported the findings).
But personally I think it is single or combined factors that stem from psychological traits, family upbringing, social experiences, and cerebral skills that enable analysis and critical thinking. Education nourrishes and develops these skills, I doubt that it creates them.
But high in my list of factors are whether one is insulated or cultured, socially speaking. (The US masses that voted Buch as well as the so-called Islamists are of the insulated, unclutured types, thus clear right-wingers). A cultured individual may well be someone who never set foot in a school but has learned through socialization beyond her/his own surroundings, traveled, got involved (through unions, etc..)
I would further add that it is more likely that a right-winger "wakes up" and join the left than a left-winger "wakes up" and join the right. That is what I observed anyway.

They do manage to do life-threatening things to individuals, mind you, which is why we have to worry about them.

i had a serious injury to my spinal (i broke my back), had two surgeries since november to try and repair the damage. so basically i'm a shut in right now as i recover ...and worry about what kind of contribution can i provide to the 'activist' community now that i'm all busted up.
the good news is, i'm slowly regaining my ability to walk ... no marches to the US consulate, but i'm able to make it to the mailbox and back. it's funny how the little things make you happy.
what's really sad is how fucked up the health care system is. i never knew it was this bad until i really needed it. i get really anxious when i hear what Ralph Klein has in mind, because i can't afford to be judged whether i'm worth the care.

statica: I can relate, sympathise, and empathise. I've had back surgery and I know the amazing triumph of those first tentative steps. I used to call my afternoon therapy walks my perambulations, and set myself a goal..make it to the corner and back...past the corner...
sometimes the "and back" part seemed like an absolute marathon.
It gets better. Truly. I still have my cane although I no longer need it. Called it "my upstanding friend".

I find right wingers (far right mind you) to be steriotypically mean, inconsiderate and at times racist but more intollerent (subconciously racist?).
I find "far" left sources to be at times dismissive and arrogant which offends me.

thanks so much for your kind words. they really cheered me up today! i do try and check on babble when i get a chance, maybe even get back to some writing when i'm better. right now, every time i am able to bend my knee or ankle, i'm amazed and that's good enough for me.
i fell of my skateboard ... i remember my mother freaked out after i hurt myself, with the whole 'i told you so' attitude that i was too old for that kinda shit.

Red T-shirt is a middleage man of many contrasts.
Family is extremely important to him, yet he's on marriage #3. Always been very big on equality, yet works in a white male dominated occupation running up against many narrow minded attitudes. He is an unabashed animal lover who spoils his 2 dogs, 2 rabbits, 2 birds and numerous inhabitants of 3 aquariums, yet he is an unapologetic carnivore who occasionally hunts or fishes.
Raised on the edge of Canada's largest city, he lives in a century home in the small town of Port Hope and aspires to live an even more rural lifestyle. With a college diploma and a couple of years of university he is a blue collar union member and lead steward in a field not remotely related to his education. Has a reputation as a shit disturbing activist & letter writer, but couldn't spell to save his own life.
He LOVES this country coast to coast, yet hasn't been in another province for over 20 years (barring a one night stay at Chateau Montebello Quebec). Red T-shirt has always supported the NDP, but has only become highly politically active through the non-partisan PAC he helped found for his local. Largely unaffected by the gross physical injuries or death in adults his work exposes him to, he is always devestated by any suffering at all in either children or animals.
Day by day he becomes evermore like his Father in appearance, manorisms and attitudes. A man he only really learned to appreciate once becoming an adult himself. The loss of whom Red T-shirt has still not recovered from, 10 years later.
That ought to be enough red flags to get me kicked out of this forum...

I worked as a frontline caseworker with severely disturbed children for as long as I could stand the frustrations of severe underfunding, understaffing and generally not giving a sh*t by the governments charged with the children's care.
I live a minimalist existence by choice.
I am; the loneliness of the abandoned and neglected, the rage of the mistreated and excluded, the compassion & the empathy of enduring friendships, the grief of those who feel forced to escape this life through suicide, the bewilderment of children forced to confront realities beyond their maturity, the silent suffering of the abused & victimized.
I am blatant urban rot and suburban pretense that "everything's just fine". I am a lurker in the shadows and a megaphone at the head of a crowd.
