Happy New Year!

Sharon

Does anyone want to say happy new year? Well, I do!

A little later, we -- my husband, 12-year-old son and I -- will go out for dinner, dancing and champagne. We will go to a lovely hotel restaurant -- one of the prettiest in the city -- that's all curved windows that look out over the Halifax Common.

We went last year and loved the fairy lights everywhere and the silver and black theme -- balloons, top hats and tiaras, noisemakers etc. -- everything in silver and black. It seemed so elegant. The music was great and we all had a lovely evening.

Our son said it was the "best night of his life." I'm sure it won't be long before he won't be interested in New Years Eve with Mum and Dad -- so we'll take it while we can get it.

I wish a wonderful 2007 to all.

Happy New Year, everyone. Be good- and if you can't do that, at least don't get caught.

Auld Lang Syne
Robert Burns

Chorus.
And for auld lang syne, my jo,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne,
1.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And days o' auld lang syne.
2.
And surely ye'll be your pint-stowp!
And surely I'll be mine!
And we'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.
3.
We twa hae run about the braes
And pu'd the gowans fine;
But we've wander'd mony a weary foot
Sin auld lang syne.
4.
We twa hae paidl'd i' the burn,
Frae mornin' sun till dine;
But seas between us braid hae roar'd
Sin auld lang syne.
5.
And there's a hand, my trusty fiere!
And gie's a hand o' thine!
And we'll tak a right guid willy waught,
For auld lang syne.

A great 2007 for babblers. Personally, I'm hoping for a stronger Canadian peace movement in the coming year. We could use it.

er,..sorry about that.

Its all good. Lets squabble and agitate to make our land a better country for all Canadians. We are such a wealthy country but totally incognisant of the role we could play on the world stage.

Happy New Years, I see the new mods managed to survive the Christmas baptism intact, thats got to be a good sign...

Pft,

Everyone knows that new years was just another wacky holiday concoted by the greeting card companies to sell fireworks.

"Happy New Year!"

Sharon, what a wonderful long term memory you are building for your son, I loved doing things like with my parents, and now today when they are long gone, it is those memories that are the clearest and strong.

But those memories are bitter sweet for me. It speaks to an age/mind set of innocence that is/was all to quickly lost, in the bitter truth of reality. However, I guess the innocent belief that; "all is good all the time", created in those time out of time moments, is also because of priviledge, so perhaps better its lost, but the memory is still sweet nonetheless.

Hey All!

Just flyin by on the way to pick up the oldest daughter from work, and we're heading out for a good late lunch/early dinner at a great place.

I want to add my own greetings to everyone here for a Happy Gregorian Calendar New Year and best wishes for 2007. (even if yer one of those who don't go by this calendar, I still send you greetings for a better and happier/healthier New Year, whenever you think it starts).

Here's the lyrics from a good old tune to start the year off in a positive and hopeful way.

John Lennon--Power To The People
Album: Power To the People 1971

Power to the people.
Power to the people.
Power to the people.
Power to the people.
Power to the people.
Power to the people.
Power to the people.
Power to the people, right on.

Say you want a revolution,
We better get on right away,
Well you get on your feet,
And out on the street.

Singing power to the people,
Power to the people.
Power to the people.
Power to the people, right on.

A million workers working for nothing,
You better give 'em what they really own,
We got to put you down,
When we come into town.

Singing power to the people,
Power to the people.
Power to the people.
Power to the people, right on.

I gotta ask you comrades and brothers,
How do you treat you own woman back home,
She got to be herself,
So she can free herself.

Singing power to the people,
Power to the people.
Power to the people.
Power to the people, right on.
Now, now, now, now.

Oh well, power to the people.
Power to the people.
Power to the people.
Power to the people, right on.

Yeah, power to the people.
Power to the people.
Power to the people.
Power to the people, right on.

Power to the people.
Power to the people.
Power to the people.
Power to the people, right on...

Happy New Year!

I think I'm going back to bed now.

Sharon

I hope everyone had a grand beginning to 2007 -- although it looks as if M. Spector and Michelle are having second thoughts.

Sharon, that sounds luverly.

lagatta, it was quite luverly. It was different from last year -- as it would be -- but it was still fun. The band that played last year is very popular (they had a much bigger gig this year) so it was a crowded and very exciting atmosphere last year.

This year, the music was a jazz trio and they were great and very danceable -- but it was more laid-back and relaxed.

We all enjoyed it, however, and had a lovely window-side table where we could see the midnight fireworks from downtown as we sipped our champagne.

quote:

Sharon, what a wonderful long term memory you are building for your son, I loved doing things like with my parents, and now today when they are long gone, it is those memories that are the clearest and strong.

remind, I think and hope that you're absolutely right. He does seem to embed in his memory some of the things we do to mark certain special occasions.

We had never been really big on celebrating New Year's Eve -- usually a bottle of champagne and watching TV at home, unless we fell asleep -- until 1999 turned into 2000 and it seemed such a big deal. Our son was six and we took him downtown and saw fabulous fireworks and he has never forgotten that -- and we've "done" New Year's Eve since, although not always the same way.

And lagatta (she who is always interested in things culinary), today, for New Year's Day, I made a lovely seafood casserole (fresh shrimp, scallops -- pronounced "scollops" -- haddock and lobster and some nice veg) served over orzo and with a good Spanish sparkling wine (Segura Viudas).

So... now we're ready and we "rejoice as a strong person to run a race" (slightly amended), to face a new year and to work to make the world a better place.

Love and peace to all.

Fidel

Ya sure, tell us in Ontario about fresh seafood. You'll get yours.

Sharon

Fidel, I thought fresh seafood was available in Ontario. Isn't everything possible in the centre of the universe?

We bought our seafood on Sunday afternoon and the Fisherman's Market was really hopping. I think there is a real tradition of fish and seafood for New Years in the Maritimes.

I will confess, however, that the lobster was personally frozen (and thawed) by me. One of the NDP riding associations near us does lobster dinners delivered to your door as a fundraiser in mid-December. It's a lovely dinner made up of lobsters probably hauled out of the water the day they're delivered and it's served with all the proper things -- potato salad, green salad, fresh rolls etc. (Lobster season in south-western Nova Scotia opens in late November and runs until late May.)

We ordered three dinners and, as it happened, our son wasn't home that evening so we took most of the meat from his lobster and froze it very quickly. It was very good and fresh-tasting when it was thawed.

I must say, the seafood is a nice change from the more substantial roasts and fowl that are usually the fare over the holidays.

Sineed

quote:

I thought fresh seafood was available in Ontario.

Yabut it costs a bomb.

Fidel

That's a great fundraising idea, Sharon. I'd make use of leftover lobster, maybe in a seafood stew or something, he says as he tries desperately to remember actually cooking something respectable with fresh fish. Lapointe's in the market has decent stuff most of the time. And it's not so cheap like Sineed says. Ok, let's cut it out now. I'm drooling all over the keyboard.

Sineed: I read that the reason we do see el relatively cheapo frozen shrimp in the stores is because farmers in SE Asia are wrecking shoreline ecosystems to grow them for us, and they are using unbelievable amounts of fresh water, which they can't afford to environmentally speaking, in flushing the shrimp beds. Or whatever it is they do with the fresh water to produce shrimp for export.

Happy Belated New Year to all babblers! I was out on the west coast for the holidays. I have been informed by family that there is a front page photo (white rock paper) of mayakovsky and his brother coming out of the Pacific at the Polar Bear Swim in White Rock.

Happy happy! Nice to see you. Missed this when you first posted it.

Sounds like a nice winter vacation you had.

Saturday night was an awesome New Years party. It was probably the coolest one I've ever been to. Basically, we all just sat around with the TV on watching some British sitcoms and arguing politics while ingesting copious sums of cookies that we just baked. It was quite good.
