What a beautiful article, but I was so damn upset when I read about the missionaries. I am a Christian, and I really despise what missionaires have done to our world. We have been robbed of so many gems in the human family because of them......sorry about the bitterness. I know not all of them are bad. But that left a bad taste in my mouth.

The point in the article, where they said that divorce rates have gone up now that the ancient practice is falling away, reminded me of the youtube link about Atheists that mspector put up.
One of the stats in the film clip showed that divorce rates are higher, amongst those that identify with believing in God, than those that identify as being atheists.

Yep, well I too I'm pretty glad that tradition doesn't exist here. Things are oppressive enough without that added to it.
In the case of my wife and myself, and most of the people we know, although it's the guy that usually does the asking, the decision to marry is pretty much mutual and consensual. That's the way it should be, I think.
But on the other hand, as a seafood admirer, that fish dish sounds good.
As for the missionaries, I'm surprised all they've managed to mess up so far is the divorce rates. I know that churches no longer have the economic and political clout they once had.
But I still wonder how long it will take before the mass corporate take-over of land and resources, and the rise bureaucratic governance, set in. along with the sweatshops and child labour, ecological destruction, suppression of basic rights and the introduction of McDonalds and Starbucks.

Maybe I read it wrong, but the part where it read that they are "powerless to say no" gave me the impression that there was some flirting going on and they had an eye for each other. There aren't too many countries like ours where folks court and check out and contemplate their spouses-to-be (or not)...many times (whether this is right or wrong), the person who is your boyfriend is GOING to be your husband. I know it's changing, but many cultures I think still go on that...no multiple SOs before marriage, just the one.
