Why can't I log out

ohara

I wrote to Michelle but she has not responded. So I ask here, has anyone else had the same problem? I can't seem to log-out of Babble...feeling trapped...hhheelllp

Yes, it is odd. It says you have logged out, but you aint.

Cueball Cueball's picture

Sorry that should be "...youse aint."

oldgoat

Bwahahahah!!!

We've got you now!

Actually I ran into that problem this morning myself. No idea what the problem is, so I just did what everyone does. I called Michelle.

oreobw

Works for me.

I've found that when I clear out my history and cookies that gets me logged out of rabble. Otherwise the default seems to be to stay logged in automatically. This could be part of a sinister plot that I missed at the last moderator's meeting....

Oh shoot. Sorry about that. I've had a LOT of e-mails since the server change and I thought I'd answered your PM.

The only thing I can think of is that you have to log out when it says "www" in your browser, and also when it DOESN'T say "www" in your browser. So that means logging out twice. Same with logging in. If you're not logged in on some pages, you just have to log in from a page where you're not logged in (probably one without a "www" in it) and then you should be good to go.

I've already sent the tech folks a heads up on this. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Michelle

P.S. If that doesn't work then do as bcg suggests - clear your cookies. Or at least, clear the rabble cookies if you don't want to lose your logins from everywhere else.

Michelle

Ack! Okay, my advice didn't work. I can't log out either.

You know, it's interesting - I had this same problem at my father's place over the holidays! I couldn't log him out and myself in - I had to use a different browser. What a pain.

I'm sorry, but other than clearing your rabble cookies, I don't know how to deal with it.

Maysie Maysie's picture

All this talk of rabble cookies has given me an idea for a rabble fundraiser: bake sale!

FYI, I bake a mean banana bread (with cream cheese frosting). Mmmm.

oreobw

Clearing out cookies and temporary internet files (from IE) is a good idea every few weeks (or even days) as otherwise your browser tends to slow down.

This is especially true if you access a lot of different sites.

ohara

Well I tried clearing all the cookies and my history but I remain locked in Babble....achhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

oldgoat

Hmm, I cleared my cookies and still can't log out.

Maybe I'll try banning ohara and see if that works.

Poor ohara!

Jingles

Hmm. At first I couldn't log in. But after deleting my old rabble cookie, and then allowing it again, it worked fine. I can log out jes fine too. I use Firefox.

ohara

removed...didnt want people to think I was serious..but I still cant log out

Michelle

Are you serious? You know I was kidding, right?

If you're serious, then no, it definitely isn't a conspiracy. None of us seem to be able to log out. I've sent an e-mail to tech support about it, but they have relatively limited time so it takes some time to get to requests.

If you're not serious, then

It is odd isnt it? I too cannot log out...not that it matters, I can think of worse places to be than Babble.....then again...kidding guys

Steppenwolf Allende

Hey I think I got y'all beat. This is the first day I have posted anything here in almost a month.

The last time I participated here, I didn't log out. And lo and behold, I'm still logged in!

SO maybe the cynical solution to not being able to log out is not to bother. An open door is more welcoming anyway!

Seriously though - I understand that this is a problem. I see your point, SA, but some people aren't using home computers, and some people could be using public, shared computers.

I've sent a couple of messages to our tech folks, the last one being yesterday and urgent. But they only work one day a week, so they'll get to it when they can.

kimi

It seems to be fixed. I just tried logging on and then off, no problem. Is it okay for others?

oldgoat

Nope still can't do it.

Michelle

Me neither.

Kim, look at the top of the page that comes up. You'll get this notice:

quote:

FYI

Thank you, you are now logged off.

» Please use your browser's back button to return.

but then on the same page, it will say:

quote:

» Hello, Michelle [ Log Out ]

and you'll still be logged in. Try it again - are you really logged out when it says you are?

kimi

Nope. I got a message that I was not logged on. I had to logon again to post this note. It will probably be helpful for Annares to know the inconsistency (making it no doubt more complicated to fix!). I'm using IE, don't know if that makes any difference.

oldgoat

Harrumpf! And a mere recent rabble rouser at that. I'd call that pretty damn cheeky!!

clersal

Why do you want to log out?
I never log out as I am always looking in anyhow.

oreobw

Catchy band, them Eagles--and appropriate for this thread.

How about that dead guy Elvis:

We're caught in a trap
I can't log out
Because I love ya too much Babble...

ohara

Meanwhile im still trapped in Babble.

N.Beltov N.Beltov's picture

Have you used more than one browser to access babble? It's my experience that I cannot log out of babble from one browser when I logged on with another browser. Maybe ... try logging on ... while you are logged on.

Otherwise, maybe you can be the first babble ghost, doomed, for a certain time, to walk the ....

Me too! Gah.

Michelle

IGNORE THIS POST! DON'T CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD! THIS WON'T WORK AND YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO READ BABBLE!

CLEAR YOUR COOKIES INSTEAD! (See instructions below for doing this.)

ohara, here's a thought - have you tried changing your password? If you change your password then the way I think it works is that the system logs you out and then you have to log in again with a new password.

Not an ideal solution, of course, but it might work as a temporary fix until our tech folks can figure this out.

What happens when you paste this:

http://www.rabble.c...

into your browser's address window and click "go"? And make sure you've only got one browser window open when you do it.

Michelle

Didn't work for me!

Fidel

I noticed I am able to login multiple times with multiple windows.

But if I logout of just one of them, I have to login again before posting in any of the browser instances of babble. Which is the way it should be. So the sanity check passed at this end of things a-ok

I think I found one good thing about not being able to log out. Anyone who tries to be a sock-puppet will be stopped

Fidel

Maybe a well-placed clearcookie function call in the logout script would fix it. Just sayin

Michelle

Hey! It works for me now!

What about the rest of you?

I had to use another server at work today because the one I normally use isn't working. So I was logged out when I switched. Then I logged in. And just now I tried logging out again, and I was able to log out! Woo hoo!

So now I don't know whether it's because babble is fixed, or because of my server switch.

I wonder if those who are using the same server now that they were using when we had the server changeover are having problems? Our publisher, Kim, was saying all along that she could log in and out no problem.

GOD

Yeah, I had a look at it. Wasn't too hard to fix. Well not for me, anyway.

Erik Redburn

Hey, its God! Thanks for dropping by Babble now and then big guy (gal?) as it helps maintain my sometime flagging faith. I know I haven't always been good and sometimes neglect my ritual sacrifices but if you forgive me my transgressions I'll forgive you my receding hairline.

(oh, and if it's not too much to ask, couldja try smiting a few more bad guys and a few less good ones, we're getting out numbered down here. Harper might win a majority way things been goin lately, and that Couldn't be good for the Rest of your creations...jes sayin is all)

Coyote

Come to think of it, why do bad things happen to good people?

Erik Redburn

Good question too, if you can get an answer out of his/her all-knowingness you might be up for a Nobel or Pulitzer. Or a few free dinner parties at least.

Fidel

unsubscribe me from rabble, please

the whole "NDP Puppet Show" in Canadian Politics was clearly a troll thread allowed to go on unchecked.

close my account

thanks
no longer interested

fidel

Michelle

I can't "unsubscribe" you. You can log out and not post if you don't want to post here anymore.

HeywoodFloyd

Maybe you could execute a pwd change, randomly type letters, then copy and paste the string into the confirm pwd box, confirm it, then log out.

Blammo. You can't log in anymore.

sidra

Close your account ? Stubborness!

Moderators, please tell Fidel that it is against policy to unsubscribe a Babler who has been a member for more than 2 years and posted over 500 messages and thus gained honorary membership for life
