Eugenics, Southern Baptist style

Albert Mohler, president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, asks: Is Your Baby Gay? What If You Could Know? What If You Could Do Something About It?

One of his conclusions:

quote:

If a biological basis [for homosexuality] is found, and if a prenatal test is then developed, and if a successful treatment to reverse the sexual orientation to heterosexual is ever developed, we would support its use as we should unapologetically support the use of any appropriate means to avoid sexual temptation and the inevitable effects of sin.

Fortunately .

Wow lets hope test to find out if your child is gay or not never come to fruition. That would just be a debate and a half.

Though if it did come to fruition I would love to see how politicians running for whatever office would dance their way around that debate.

Hmmm... Imagine some time in the future when there is a huge stigma associated with being straight when you were "designated" gay before birth.

"Yes, I used to date other boys just to fit in but secretly I fantasized about girls. Eventually I just had to come out."

I don't really care whether they figure out how to do that, although I don't really believe there's a "gay gene" anyhow (that's subject to revision upon further evidence to the contrary).

It's no more controversial than finding out whether your child is male or female, or at least it shouldn't be. As homosexuality becomes more and more accepted (and look at the amazing strides in the last few decades - from unmentionable to gay marriage!) people aren't going to care. There are probably genetic tests that can tell you whether your kid is going to have blonde hair or brown eyes too, but people don't bother, because most people don't really care.

Frankly, I feel the same way about sexual orientation as I do about sex selection. It would be better for everyone concerned if idiot fundamentalist homophobes don't raise gay children anyhow, just as it would probably be better if sexist misogynist pigs who would abort a fetus because it's female not raise girls.

I do have to laugh at the hypocrisy, though. I'm sure Southern Baptists would freak at the thought of manipulating the genes in order to change the sex of a fetus. They'd be screaming bloody murder at the thought of altering "God's plan" in such a manner. But if it turned out that homosexuality is a gene thing, then it would be okay to change "God's plan" for those fetuses.

Scuse I just had to barge my way into this heated debate. I was just thinking that if the fundamentalists could someday order up the sex of their baby as if a cheeseburger and fries, then what would stop a gay couple from having a gay baby made to order? A gay baby with excellent health? And I say excellent health only for the reason that I would want the baby to enjoy excellent health and not for the purpose of saving the health care system money.
