wind power damage measurement! And a call for cat family planning.

Windmills kill birds and so do cats.
I am NOT raiding the bins for discontinued petfood BUT here is some food for thought.
The annual bird slaughter is about to begin, young birds, birds which go to the ground under bird feeders, or have long birdbaths.
Your housecat will be sunning itself with a full belly waiting as long as it takes.
(And the key IS the full belly) because a hungry wild cat cannot wait like this.
And the bluddy things kill frogs and shrews too.
(They never eat the shrews because they taste bad)
Wind power is going to start producing power across canada pretty soon. Please have your Killer cat data ready for the protestors! I personally rate feral housecats as the worst pest in my neighbourhood.

(The stuff below was quoted from an environmental email group)
"A wind turbine kills 2.3 birds per year.
>
> A feral housecat can kill 1000 animals per year, including birds.
>
> So you might rate the risk of various wind turbine possibilities in
millicats, which
> would be an annual mortality rate of one one thousandth that of a feral
cat.
>
> If you are actually concerned about birds, perhaps a contribution to the
Spay and Neuter
> program at your local SPCA would be in order".
The author also noted that coal power kills miners and athsmatics. (Coal power is an alternative to wind power that may not kill many birds).

Hard on canaries, though.

Planned obsolescence will be the death knell of our civilization...

With respect to the article -- "A wind turbine kills 2.3 birds per year." I find that a bit startling, I thought many more than that would find their way into the turbines.

It was just the figure for a particular wind turbine.
You gotta remember that birds are really good at flying and they aint particularly stupid.
A far bigger killer of birds than wind turbines is clean windows.
You got an open plan house where the bird can see a way in and out, you got a bird killer.
And you probably got a housecat who knows to wait to grab any stunned birds under the window.
I have seen it myself.
And cat are huge bird killers.
Anyway, the coal powered plants might kill birds too. You got to transport the coal, (ever hit a bird when you are driving?) Coal trucks do it too!
And, cat lovers are in denial about the terrible creatures that they give a home too.
Lets see them for what they are.

Not all of us are naive, Brian. We keep our's on a leash when she goes outside.

A bell on the collar dramatically reduces cats' hunting success.

She has one of those, too.

...rather amazing how quickly they learn to move without jingling it, though.

Well, obviously you're with the terrorists!

I say it's time to round up all the cats and put them in jail. Birds too. I hear they're horrible worm killers.
