Help a hippy girl!

Girl Fawkes

My head used to be full of wild ideas, my time full of interesting people, places, events. Now I'm out of school and starved for conversation - help, please? Tell me a story!

Random about me: theatre artist, pipe-dream following BFA type from Montreal, bored activist, book buying addict, and friendly hippy girl.

Welcome to babble, Girl Fawkes! If conversation is what you're looking for, you've come to the right place.

The Wizard of S...

You're wearing a Starfleet Captain's uniform right now, aren't you? What is it with The Next Generation?

I'm a Voyager fan myself.

Well what did GUY Fawkes do when HE got bored?

The Wizard of S...

I never liked voyager. The ship was cool, and having a woman captain was right on. What bugged me was the character of Tom Paris. Here was this guy, a free thinker, a member of the Maquis. Through the run of the show he is turned from a free thinking rebel to starfleet's most loyal lapdog. It's like they're trying to say if we all work really hard to conform, we'll forget everything bad about the government and be restored to it's good graces. Fuck that!

Maysie Maysie's picture

I liked Janeway the least of all the characters. I do a baaad impression of her; if there's ever another Toronto babbler get-together, and if I'm drunk enough, I'll do it. It's not pretty.

I liked Voyager for the largest numbers of actors of colour in the standard 8-9 person crew. Plus 3 women! In the ST franchise it was rare for the numbers to be more than 2 women and 2 POC. More exposure, more storylines that centered non-white actors, and I really like Robert Beltran and Garret Wang.

Wow, we've way thread drifted. Welcome, Girl Fawkes!

You might be interested to know that Canadian actor Geneviиve Bujold turned the role of Voyager Captain down. I wonder how the series would have been different.

quote:

Wikipedia: In 1994, she signed on to play the lead character, Captain Nicole Janeway, in the American television series Star Trek: Voyager. However she dropped out after filming just a few scenes of the series' first episode, stating that a TV series work schedule was too demanding. Kate Mulgrew replaced her and the character's name was changed to Kathryn Janeway.

The Wizard of S...

Kate Mulgrew was really good as Major Rayner Fleming in Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins.

There's this one funny scene where General Scott Watson, who's in the pay of ruthless industrial defense contracter George Grove, tells her that she shouldn't feel she has to overdo things and that it made no difference to him that she was a woman. But of course, he said it in a patronizing sort of way. Then Mulgrew's character smiles back, thanks him, and tells him that it makes no difference to her that he's a man. The look on his face makes the scene. Funny, funny stuff.

I think Girl Fawkes left the building. Star Trek? Good grief.

You sound like exactly what this site needs more of--someone with an INTERESTING LIFE!!!!!!

As an aging hippie/quasi-punk, I have awaited someone like you ever since I got here.

We'll talk for sure!

Ev'rybody's ills, you know it fills her with compassion
That's why she tries to save the world alone
She helps the needy in her own fashion
And tries to give them all her own

She needs an answer to her confusion
Someone to guide her with tenderness
But when she's askin' for a solution
All that she gets, you know, is
Something like this

I don't know where we come from
Don't know where we're goin' to
But if all this should have a reason
We would be the last to know
So let's just hope there is a promised land
Hang on 'til then
As best as you can

Um, yeah I knew that! I guess it's time for me to come out as a Star Trek fan. I know way more than any normal person should know about ST:V. And I'm still not talking about the paraphernalia that I own or have owned.

Heh. When geek worlds collide!

(I say this as someone who who likes both Star Trek AND voting reform!)

RP.

Thread title reminds me of this:

quote:

She took me off my guard with disappointment
I got sucked inside of her apartment
She's got dried-up flowers, flakey skin
A beaded necklace and a bottle of gin

She's a nightmare hippy girl
With her skinny fingers fondlin' my world
She's a whimsical, tragical beauty
Self-conscious and a little bit fruity

It's a new age let-down in my face
She's so spaced out and there ain't no space
She's got marijuana on the bathroom tile
I'm caught in a vortex, she's changin' my style

She's a nightmare hippy girl
With her skinny fingers fondlin' my world
She's a whimsical, tragical beauty
Uptight and a little bit snooty

She's a magical, sparklin' tease
She's a rainbow chokin' the breeze
Yo, she's busting out onto the scene
With nightmare bogus poetry
She's a melted avocado on the shelf
She's the science of herself
She's spazing out on a cosmic level
And she's meditating with the devil
She's cooking salad for breakfast
She's got tofu the size of Texas
She's a witness to her own glory
She's a never-ending story
She's a frolicking depression
She's a self-inflicted obsession
She's got a thousand lonely husbands
She's playin' footsie in another dimension
She's a goddess milking the time for all that it's worth

Umm, Deep Space Nine? Didn't Ben Sisko get bonus points for being Captain? Plus Jake Sisko and Joseph Sisko. And Michael Dorn as Worf. Kira Nerys, Jadzia Dax, Ezri Dax, Kai Winn, Quark's feminist mother Ishka, Keiko O'Brien, Kasidy Yates, Tora Ziyal, and I'm not mentioning Leeta (or am I?) Not to mention those remarkable strong women The Lady Sirella, Grilka, Arissa, and Michael Eddington's wife Rebecca Sullivan. And we see Vash, Lwaxana, etc. again.

Don't know if I could be considered a Trekkie. But I liked the original, even though it was a shoe string budget production and it showed. Na dI generally liked all the new ones, although I didn't care too much for Enterprise. Scott Bakula just didn't cut it as a captain.

I agree Deep Space Ninewas the best--not quite as sanitized and preppy.

That's probably because Austin Powers can't even begin to do that tune justice.

I like to dream yes, yes, right between the sound machine
On a cloud of sound I drift in the night
Any place it goes is right
Goes far, flies near, to the stars away from here

Well, you don't know what we can find
Why don't you come with me little girl
On a magic carpet ride
You don't know what we can see
Why don't you tell your dreams to me
Fantasy will set you free
Close your eyes girl
Look inside girl
Let the sound take you away

Last night I held Aladdin's lamp
And so I wished that I could stay
Before the thing could answer me
Well, someone came and took the lamp away
I looked around, a lousy candle's all I found

Well, you don't know what we can find
Why don't you come with me little girl
On a magic carpet ride
Well, you don't know what we can see
Why don't you tell your dreams to me
Fantasy will set you free
Close your eyes girl
Look inside girl
Let the sound take you away,

Hey, I remember "Magic Carpet Ride" being broken out in the intern welcome thread way back in October! There must be something in welcome threads that lends itself to its use, eh?

I had the first two Step LPs when they came out. Groovy stuff, but you get sick of them real soon. And then there was "The Pusher" which was just hilarious because it was so crappy.

Well, thank goodness. Usually, when I introduce myself at a party and people start yakking on about Star Trek, I flee, so I'm thrilled to learn that this didn't happen here.

Girl Fawkes

Star Trek is one of my favourite things. Steppenwolf, well, less so, but none the less appreciated.

I feel very welcome!

Michelle

Good!
