AiG's 27 million dollar monument to pseudoscience opens in a little over a week.

Who Created Heaven and Earth - and When? Museum stirs scientific debate, theological woes

BY JOHN JOHNSTON

The Creation Museum that opens in Northern Kentucky next weekend is built on this belief: God created the heavens and the Earth and all living things in six consecutive 24-hour days, 6,000 years ago.

Which leads to this belief: Floodwaters carved the Grand Canyon in a matter of days or weeks.

And to this: Dinosaurs and humans once co-existed. Indeed, museum exhibits will show them sharing space on Noah's Ark.

To believe any differently undermines biblical authority, say supporters of Answers in Genesis. And so the nonprofit, nondenominational ministry has constructed the $27 million museum to save souls and persuade people to embrace its literal interpretation of the Bible.

The ministry's claims that its views are backed by "real science" positions the museum - the largest of its kind in the world - in the center of a controversy that cuts across scientific and religious lines.

"Everything science has taught us over the course of the last 200 years teaches us that this kind of literal, biblical, creationist notion is misguided at best, and just plain false at worst," says Alan Leshner, chief executive officer of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The world's largest general scientific society, it serves 10 million scientists and publishes the journal Science.

Leshner is familiar with the Creation Museum.

"I believe in free speech," he says, "(but) I believe that people who go into the public education business - and that's what museums do - have an obligation to convey the most up-to-date and accurate information that they can, not to try to persuade people to (accept) a particular ideological belief."

An interesting cultural experiment is taking place in Petersburg Kentucky, near the Ohio border. The experiment will shed light on the following question: How much money and glitz does it take to institutionalize a scientific lie?

Great media fanfare is already beginning to surround the official opening later this month of the $27 Million Creation Museum, close to the Cincinnati airport. Designed to oddly resemble natural history museums throughout the world, this will be a supernatural history museum, denying most, if not all, of natural history on this planet as centuries of careful study and experimentation have revealed it.

The reason for this colossal unreason is quite simple: The historical record in Genesis, as it is interpreted by Ken Ham, who created the organization Answers in Genesis, must be literally true. Since this is incompatible with essentially all of modern scientific knowledge, therefore modern scientific knowledge must be incorrect.

Hey, how about we make this the "creation science" thread, and put all new stories about creation "science" initiatives here? I think there are a bunch of other threads about this museum (or perhaps others) in this forum and it would be great to keep the stories in one thread for ease of search.

Isn't that an oxymoron?

Oh man, you mean you don't know ?. Any Sunday morning televangelist will tell you about the Jewish equation. A thousand years is as a day with the Lord and a day is a thousand years.

And Israel is the fig tree. When the fig tree sprouts up and bears fruit, know that the coming of the Lord is nigh, or something like that. Oh ya, and beware those diabolical Russians. The war of Gog and Magog is a matter of time. Never trust the Russians ever-ever. It's why the military-industrial complex must have hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars every year so themselves and imperialist allies might arm themselves with the most terrible weapons in history now so as to avoid our inescapable apocalyptic destiny at some point down the road.
