Have to say it's refreshing to find an intelligent forum....altho most of the posters seem way out of my league in education. But that's a good thing.
Please try to use "big" words, as I'm attempting to keep my last two workin' brain cells from atrophying......it's an ongoing struggle.

Thanks Oldgoat !! The tiny sparking those two little cells was producing was pert annoying.

but really, I spend my days working with pre-schoolers, so my vocabulary has devolved into "walking feet kids" an "use your words".
The ever popular " go back an wash your hands" is a biggie too.

Wasn't Harper cast as a libertarian at one point when he sought the leadership of the Alliance party? Left and Libertarian...hmmmmm, they're the crowd calling for less government interaction in society. As for your two sparking cells, many of the forums here will provide you with endless hours of stimulation.

He may have been....being from the states all I know is he seemed OK then reality set in an has been pissing everyone off ever since.
I more meant Libertarian US sense, where ya have the nerve to think for yourself. Oh yeah, closer to the Lib "take" on the constitution.
More like being a lefty, without all the drama an sobbing.

Sorry, I don't want to be hostile when you've just started here, but I don't understand how being a supporter of Libertarianism could be seen as being a lefty, without the sobbing.

That's OK Phonz.....Maybe I need to actually find the appropriate label, before someone just smacks me.
I was thinking, in describing libertatian, somewhat along the lines of democrat ideology without all the mistakes...plus somehow Pete Seeger kept coming to mind...so what you got was a " no I'm not red, yet I'm not a democrat anymore...hm-m-m doesn't that make me a libertarian?" sort of?
Hence...the tendency for politically educated folks to smack me.

However....to my credit, I'm a Edward Abby fan from way back. Plus Seeger...so I think this puts me in a grey area as far as politics.

There are left wing libertarians. A wonderful woman I know who lives in Austin (sweet as can be) is a lefty libertarian. Although I doubt she'd call us lefties whiners. Now take that back [img]tongue.gif" border="0[/img] or I'm telling on you.

I never use the term left-libertarian because I believe the two elements are incompatible.
I think libertarians dislike the state as a central principle of their philosophy. Generally, leftists take the opposite stance, because they support state programmes directed at enhancing equality, such as welfare, unemployment insurance, and state provided medical care.
Libertarians dislike the state because they do not want any interference in the present distribution of wealth. A weak state allows for agglomerations of private wealth and power to operate in a relatively unopposed manner. That's whty Conrad Black is a libertarian.
It is better, i think to speak of being a "civil libertarian" if you oppose the arbitrary use of state power in matters of fundamental justice such as criminal law, immigration, etc.
Where the physical liberty of the subject is at stake, state power needs to be tightly reined. This is much less true when speaking of "the right to invest" or "the right to run my business as I see fit."
