Darren Reynolds

I never know what to say in these "introduce yourself" posts, so hopefully this doesn't come off as sounding incredibly silly. 30 year old happily married father of a 7 month old baby boy. I've always voted, though never bothered to align myself with any particular party.

Suppose you could say that's about to change ...

Awww! Babykin-peekaboo-sweetieboo!

Sorry, 7 months old is such an awesome age, just having a little flashback there. I was a shameless babytalker with my little one.

Welcome, Darren! What political party are you aligning yourself with now?

Hi Darren, and welcome.

You don't come across as silly at all. Michelle on the other hand..., well, she's usually quite lucid and rational.

Michelle

Cutesy-wootsie boo-boo wittle bitty fing! Perfectly rational!

What about the itsy-bitsy poo poo!

WillC

I have a 13 month old grandson. (I can't remember when my child was anywhere near that age. She's now about the same age as the supreme moderator of this group.)

Seeing what my grandson's parents go through, I'd be amazed if you get much time to post here. Or maybe you are super efficient, and can accomplish many things with your left hand while you're changing diapers with your right.

So enjoy life opening before you, and welcome here, Darren.

If he's anything like my kids at seven months, there's nothing itsy-bitsy about his poo-poos!

I found this forum by accident.

Looks like an interesting forum.

Welcome. You did fall into the silly thread. We are usually a little more lucid!

Red Cedar

Actually, I found the forum recently and just registered yesterday.

I don't mind the thread.

It's good to have fun.

Where is coast Salish?

Red Cedar

clersal:

A somewhat long, but hopefully informative explanation regarding your question:

Vancouver is on Coast Salish traditional territory.

In this case, the Squamish, Musquem and other surrounding First Nations that traditonally use Vancouver for cultural, political, religious, and food gathering purposes live in Coast Salish territories.

There are other coast salish First Nations in the lower mainland and on Vancouver Island, but Vancouver is on the Squamish/Musquem,Burrard traditional territories.

Another example is that the 2010 Olympics is being held in Lil'wat/Squamish territories.

Keeping in mind that B. C. is still "unceded" territory according to the Royal Proclamation of 1763:

"Unceded territory refers to land in North America that was never ceded to a government entity by the Native peoples (the First peoples of Canada and Native American tribes or nations) who originally lived on this land, and that has never been set apart, legislated, founded, created or established as a reserve. Some of these land claims were recognized by treaty with the United States federal government although control was not actually handed over to the Native American peoples.

Native American and First peoples nations hold that such land rightly belongs to them under international treaties."

This where the Treaty issue is a contenious issue in B. C.:

"And whereas it is just and reasonable, and essential to our Interest, and the Security of our Colonies, that the several Nations or Tribes of Indians with whom We are connected, and who live under our Protection, should not be molested or disturbed in the Possession of such Parts of Our Dominions and Territories as, not having been ceded to or purchased by Us, are reserved to them, or any of them, as their Hunting Grounds -- We do therefore, with the Advice of our Privy Council, declare it to be our Royal Will and Pleasure, that no Governor or Commander in Chief in any of our Colonies of Quebec, East Florida. or West Florida, do presume, upon any Pretence whatever, to grant Warrants of Survey, or pass any Patents for Lands beyond the Bounds of their respective Governments. as described in their Commissions: as also that no Governor or Commander in Chief in any of our other Colonies or Plantations in America do presume for the present, and until our further Pleasure be known, to grant Warrants of Survey, or pass Patents for any Lands beyond the Heads or Sources of any of the Rivers which fall into the Atlantic Ocean from the West and North West, or upon any Lands whatever, which, not having been ceded to or purchased by Us as aforesaid, are reserved to the said Indians, or any of them."

Traditional territories where treaties are not signed within B. C. are still "unceded territories" and still legally belong to First Nations people in B. C. according to the Royal Proclamation of 1763.

All levels of Canadian Government(s), through Canadian law, are trying to find loop-holes to superscede this part of the Royal Proclamation in order to try to undermine First Nations rights to claiming B. C. as "unceded" territories under the Proclamation.

First Nations people all over B. C. know where their traditonal territories start and end. Some overlap with other the territories of other tribes.

Thanks.....Um, I don't want this to sound like a stupid question, but are you referring to the whole coast...of B.C.?

Red Cedar

clersal:

Coast Salish territories are on parts of the lower mainland and parts of Vancouver island.

Unceded territories are wherever treaties weren't signed all over B. C.

Here is an example of a map of First Nations territories within B. C.

awesome and tiring ... heh. he's pulling up and cruising around on anything that'll support his weight. walls, chairs, the sides of his playpen, baby-gates, you name it. we figure at his current rate of "learning" he'll be free standing within a month ... be a bit yet before he starts walking on his own, but he's already getting lost of practice while holding onto people's fingers etc and babywalking.

the ndp. i had a "run-in" of sorts with a liberal candidate from the riding i grew up in a number of years ago that really soured me on that party, and i haven't really been all that impressed with anything they've done in the interim.

same thing really as the conservative people in this area ... there came a time a year or so ago when my wife and I needed some help with something ... the conservative riding office didn't even bother to respond at all to our concerns, while an ndp member from another riding was more than happy to help us out as they could.

its little things like that, along with my "natural" socio-political leanings that make the ndp a much more comfortable fit for me ...

ps - no coffee yet, so hopefully that's legible ...
