Pride for Red D...

I was reading Ms yesterday and I noticed that the femninists is=n the us seem to be much more active on the abortion issue than canadian feminists are. I read Herizons and I don't remember ever seeing an article about this issue. Why is that ?

Uh, what issue? And what do we need to be active about in an aggressive way?

Abortion, I would assume.

Well, our rights in Canada aren't as threatened as they are in the US, so that would probably explain why feminists there are more active on abortion issues than we are.

But Canadian feminists can't be complacent yet. There are still far too many publicly-funded hospitals in Canada that do not provide access to abortion. For instance, there are Catholic hospitals that won't provide them for religious reasons. They should lose all public funding and, since no hospital in Canada should be privately funded, shut down.

There are public, secular hospitals where they supposedly have a mandate to provide abortions, but gee gosh golly, none of our doctors want to do it, so oh well, I guess all the women in our town and surrounding areas will have to do without. They wouldn't get away with that if it were any other necessary service. They should be made to actively search for a doctor that specializes in abortion and to provide the service.

Access is a HUGE issue in Canada, and it's not just a feminist issue, but a class issue as well. That's definitely something we should be fighting for.

What have I personally done about it? Not much, I'm afraid. Pride for Red Dolores is right. American feminists are much more active on this than Canadian ones in general, and I think it's because their basic legal rights are being threatened. Here, we've won the legal battle, but it's not over yet unless any woman who wants an abortion can get one. And that's not the case.

If our legal rights are erroded by lack of access, then that sounds similar to what's happening in the US- groups limiting access to abortion.
This is an rural issue as well- mostly these services are offered in cities, and if you have no money for transport and a room, then that effectively kills acess. The government should pay for these things, in addition to abortions.

or if they don't want to do that, they should use the same amount of money given to hospitals that won't do abortions to open up other clinics where women can get abortions.
