a mistaken identity

I am pleased to have found babble/rabble especially at this time.
I live in Kingston and was recently offered a job at a retirement home but needed a back ground check. I was told that I needed to have my fingerprints checked because I was confused with another woman who was pardoned for a sexual offence and her and I had similar name or birthday. I went for the prints and asked (kingsoton police clerk) if this would be the end of it. My answer was no, and that as long as we both have the similarity (life) I could be confused as her. I am very worried! What about travelling? Some countries put you in jail and ask questions later. Similar to a recent story in the papers these days! Maher Arar! Not to say that is where I am at but there is a possibility?
Looking for similar stories and help in any way.
Thank you so much. anichilipepper

Welcome to babble! Have you considered changing your name?

Kidding, mostly. I have no idea what border crossings would be like for you. I'd be nervous about that myself if I were you. Maybe the best thing to do, if you need to travel, is to get in touch with the Embassy of the country you want to travel to and just tell them your situation and see what they'd need in order to assure them that you are who you say you are.

I did consider changing my name and discussed that with my brother, his question was, would that seem "guilty?" I appreciate your answer, but I just want My Life back. I dont understand that with all of today's technology, THEY dont know who I am!

I wanted to bring a volunteer into my workplace but the criminal background check showed that he had the same name and date of birth as a convicted felon. Long story short, he had to be fingerprinted by the RCMP before he was allowed to work with me.

Not sure about border crossings, though. The Watch List maintained by the Americans is notoriously wide-sweeping.

Thank you for sharing that with me. I wonder if there will ever be an end to my delima? Will he too always be confused with this other person? I imagine he will, and perhaps didnt ask.

Once your on the so called list the American immigration people will hound you forever.

There is an ex US congressman on the list and he is hassled every time he crosses the border or takes a flight.....if your name ends up on the no fly list (even if its someone else) you will have a very difficult time. To make matters worse that list is shared with Canadians and you may not be able to get on a plane in your own country.
