Cafe Scientifiques in Canada

Has anyone had the chance to attend a Cafe Scientifique meeting this year? They're billed as a way for scientists and experts to discuss scientific ideas and engage with the public in a casual setting. It's the first year they're up and running across Canada as far as I know. I guess they're Canada's version of European philosophy cafes, in which intellectuals informally debate ideas with the public. The next time there's a session scheduled in my area, I'll make an effort to go, to see what they're all about.

quote:

Cafй Scientifique is where you can have a drink and learn about the latest ideas and issues in science and technology in an informal setting. It’s not a lecture! It’s a place for group discussion and audience involvement is the most important ingredient.

Some really provocative topics. Sounds like fun - and interesting to boot; bringing back extinct species, for example.

There is no reason why a message board cannot be discussing some of these topics - as long as they didn't scare off by becoming over-intellectualized. Some feel that "experts" have, perhaps, had the rostrums too long.

The list of events seems to taper off at the end of November. I hope there's an updated schedule for the new year rather than this being a one-time thing. I also wouldn't mind getting some of Toronto's topics thrown my city's way...
