Canada ranks 18th out of 128 countries in the conservative World Economic Forum's annual "Gender Gap Index" list.

The Swiss-based organization measures discrepancies between men and women in four main categories, each with its own sub-index: educational attainment (Canada ranks 26th), economic participation and opportunity (13th), political empowerment (36th), and health and survival (51st).

Sweden topped the list with 81% equality. Canada's score was 72%.

The top 22:

1 Sweden
2 Norway
3 Finland
4 Iceland
5 New Zealand
6 Philippines
7 Germany
8 Denmark
9 Ireland
10 Spain
11 United Kingdom
12 Netherlands
13 Latvia
14 Lithuania
15 Sri Lanka
16 Croatia
17 Australia
18 Canada
19 Belgium
20 South Africa
21 Moldova
22 Cuba

Cuba was in a virtual tie with Canada at 72% (rounded). Cuba ranked above Canada in the Political Empowerment sub-index: 23rd compared to 36th.

The report says:

quote:

Cuba enters the rankings for the first time this year, coming in at 22nd, and replaces Colombia as the highest ranking country in the region. Cuba is boosted by small gaps between boys and girls enrolment in primary and secondary education, a diminutive gap on women and men's literary rates, a relatively high percentage of women in parliament and women in ministerial-level positions and a higher percentage of women than men among professional and technical workers.

Afghanistan isn't even on the list, for lack of available data. You'd think with all their progress we keep hearing about regarding women's rights, there'd be at least some hard data to back it up...

Other countries in the list include:

31 USA
51 France
55 Venezuela
73 China
88 Zimbabwe
91 Japan
93 Mexico
96 Kuwait
114 India
118 Iran
120 Egypt
124 Saudi Arabia
126 Pakistan

You can view a one-page .pdf profile for any of the 128 countries by clicking its name on the list at the bottom of

France is below the United States!?

It's always the Nordic countries that are on the top of these lists. I wish they'd export some of those social values along with Ikea.

How 'bout they export the social values and keep Ikea?

mgregus

That would be ideal. But the Ikea might be useful as a bait and switch tactic.

It's pleasing to know that Canada ranks in the top quintile.

Great. So we would have to find that little hex key thingy to claim our benefits.

I didn't think about that. I don't think I could handle that kind of frustration.

Better than that.

It's in the top septile.

(Cuba, however, is in the top quintile.)

What's Walmart got to do with gender equality?

Left Turn Left Turn's picture

Reading the Canada Gender Gap Index 2007 report linked to in M. Spector's opening post shows that Canada has a lot of work to do in some specific subindexes of the Gender Gap Index:

Wage equality for similar work -- Canada ranks 38th, with women only making 72% of what men make in similar positions.

Income -- Canada ranks 32nd, with Women as a whole making only 63% of what men make.

Legislators, Senior Officials, and Managers -- Although Canada ranks 15th, only 36% of the positions in this category are filled by Women.

Women in Parliament -- Canada ranks 43rd, with only 21% female MPs.

Women in Ministerial Positions -- Canada ranks 25th, with only 23% of ministerial positions filled by Women.

In the section measuring historic change in the gender index, it is reported that Canada had a 0.03 change in score between 2000 and 2007 (i.e., the score went from 0.69 in 2000 to 0.72 on the present index). I was trying to figure out if this is a good rate of change, and upon returning to the wage gap measurement of 0.72 concluded that it's NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

The country highlight blurb notes that Canada is maintaining its current ranking across the board:

quote:

Canada continues to show a similar performance as that of last year, ranking well on economic participation and opportunity (13) and educational attainment (26), and performing above average on political empowerment (36) and health and survival (51).

I find this one particularily distressing... Anyone see if this statistic is broken down any further (possibly by type of industry)?
