from the Shameless Magazine Blog.

quote:

AKA: I asked some feminists a question, and instead of answering they sent me here. Why?

Your question probably covered ground they have gone over many times before, and they didn’t want to derail the interesting discussion they were already having.

People find questions that do not further the current discussion frustrating. Questioners find being ignored at least as frustrating, and such mutual dissatisfaction can totally disrupt a discussion. By sending you here the feminists hope to avoid such disruption, yet are also not completely ignoring your question(s).

Maybe you didn’t ask a question at all, but asserted/argued a point that denied the factuality/importance of the topic being discussed. Nobody cheers at the thought of trying to run another through reams of introductory material before that person gains the grounding to argue a topic knowledgeably.

Either way, educating you on the basics would derail the discussion about the actual topic the feminists are interested in, just for you. That’s an awful lot to ask of people on the net who don’t even know you, isn’t it?

Looks great! Thanks Michelle.

Where's the Cuba 101 blog?

Looks good. Perhaps babble can unofficially adopt the in places like the feminism, AR and FN forums. Easy for me to say, though...

Good stuff all around Michelle.

Catchfire, great, um, catch.

Love this:

quote:

Stranger:1I think all women are chattel.
Old hand: Pardon me, friend, but are you using humor, irony, sarcasm, or satire? Are you perhaps about to expand on a deeper philosophical point?
Stranger: 2No, I just think women are meant to serve my needs.
Old hand: This sounds like a most unfortunate and disagreeable belief. Why should you hold such a demeaning attitude?
Stranger: 3Because the Bible, which is the literal word of God, tells me so.
Old hand: [Smashes whiskey bottle over stranger’s head. General brawl commences.]

See? Isn’t that much better? You can still have your fun in the general melee, but let’s just slow the onset down a little, hold fire for a few minutes, and see if we can get a few words through the macho murk first.

I think the three comment rule would work wonders on babble.

Sort of "three fouls and you're fair game"...?
I predict that some will abuse the two passes with lengthy RW rants and then post something half-'reasonable'...

Yeah, but the moderators can deal with that. It would be something for the participants to follow, not the moderators, who can intervene at any point. Might be a way to stall the fireworks for a little bit until a moderator comes along?

martin dufresne

Then there is the not insignificant matter of defining "stupid" and getting offenders to agree. I appreciate the intent but would rather see the moderators retain unfettered authority to challenge trespassers on list principles (without having to count down offences).

First, I kinda see the 3 strikes as entrapment, as set out in the example, you know where the dialectic is already going, so really you are just feeding the troll until you can slam them in the 3 point position.

Also, how many knowing trolls would just do it in 3 separate threads, and thereby try to escape from the 3 point rule?

Having said that, I do like have a place to send those who "appear" not to know the precepts of feminism and want us to redebate, or set out, beginning stances.

This made me laugh out loud. That's EXACTLY what I thought when I read it!

oldgoat

Actually, I've sort of done that. It was way back before my moderating days, but I'd encourage or goad someone to say something pretty unequivically contrary to policy, then serve him up to a mod.

I like the hitting them over the head with a whiskey bottle option, but that would offend my new years resolution to be more like Gandhi

martin dufresne

Exraneous thought: Interesting that Westerners started wanting to be like Gandhi only after he defeated the British Empire...

Michelle

Yeah. Weird how people only notice famous people after they become famous for something, huh? Of course, REAL fans of Gandhi would've wanted to be like him back when he was a kid, before anyone had ever heard of him.

Catchfire Catchfire's picture

I wanted to be like Gandhi this year too. But only the part where I have less salt in my diet.

Oh, and Michelle, speak for yourself. I have bootleg copies of his demo tapes. Much rawer stuff. I can stand the new material where he sells out. I mean Ben Kingsley? Come on.

Don't we all start the year out a bit like Buddha and hope by June we're more like Gandhi?

What an excellent overview. Thanks for this, Michelle. The FAQ Roundup is a great reference, starting with the "absolute basics".
