In this picture of my great grandfather in Paris outside in ww1, on his cap there's what looks like a stag with something like a horn coming out of its chest on his hat, and something that looks like a castle on his left arm. I've looked around, but I can't seem to find what regiment this makes him part of, or a website with a list of insignia from that time.

Can you give me some background on where he is was from or where he may of enlisted?
I have a few ideas right now but I need some more info.

I talked to my mother and all she remebers is something about Yorkshire. The picture in the link looks similar to the below - but the head seems to be back, and not forward. Look at the 2 captions I added of the picture.

It is common to have slightly different cap badges depending when and where soldiers received their uniforms. Different manufactures would have produced different styles of cap badge.
From the link on the Yorkshire regiment, the area produced 23 battalions of infantry this may the difference in the badges.
The other problem is that unless you know what regiment he was in, researching British cap badges are very difficult because British units have been combined and re-badge many times over the last 300 years. I believe the current Yorkshire Regiment is the combination of about 6 or 7 units.
Have you tried look for your relative’s war records on line? All Canadian World War One records are on line and I am sure that the British records are on the net.

I've tried looking for my Great Grandfather's military records, which I'm sure exist, but I find the site very difficult to use. I could be because he served before WWI, and all the records from the 1700's to then are lumped together.
I might also wrestle his marriage certificate from my brother sometime, and make sure I have as much info as possible before I try again.

I will get document-- the only one I have, I'd greatly appreciate the help.
It seems to me he served during times of relative peace for the British Empire, but I'm curious about where he served and when, and with what regiment.

But that could either be my mother's memory, or maybe since it was a postcard to his girlfriend (my great granny)he borrowed a buddy's nicer uniform.
