Which makes absolutely no sense to me considering how they could be in Spain, Italy or Greece.

British citizens have selected Canada — ahead of New Zealand and Portugal — as the top country in which to retire, according to a survey measuring perceptions of quality of life.

The survey of British expatriates living around the globe was commissioned by NatWest International Personal Banking. Respondents gave Canada a mean score of 63.95 out of 80, with high marks given for housing, natural environment and availability of consumer goods.

If they went to Italy, Spain, or Greece they would have to learn the languages. In most of Canada they can communicate in English and they might feel that the culture is similar to what they are used to.

Hey wait a minute. That's a survey asking people what country they think is the best place to retire. It's not a survey of where people actually do retire.

The numbers are very clear, way more Brits retire in Spain and other EU countries than in Canada. And the reason is obvious - they have the legal right to live there.

Very few retired Brits would be eligible for permanent residence in Canada.

oh come on:
to reiterate what Brookmere says above, what to Brits actually DO ?

A.: piles of them are moving to south-west France, esp. the Dordogne region, a once desolate old farming region, now totally revitalized by the tens of thousands of commuting (one hour to London) Englanders

and guess what: many Brits learn French !! incredible but true!!

and many say they prefer living and raising their family there ;
will wonders never cease ....

many many many Brits go to the south of Spain to retire- its sort of like going to Florida. Have you ever seen those housing shows with Brits going around Europe looking for vacation or retirement home on HGTV ?
