I'm attending this conference. A bunch of us from Toronto are driving in: road trip! I wanted to let babblers know about it.

quote:

Routes to Freedom: Reflections on the Bicentenary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade is a two-and-a-half day conference being held at the University of Ottawa's Faculty of Law from March 13th to 16th, 2008. This conference is held in conjunction with both the Common Law and Civil Law Sections.

"Routes to Freedom" celebrates the elimination of a pernicious piece of legislation but the words of law are a shallow reflection of the depth of institutional and societal racism which resulted in its creation. The reality of law is sustained by the actions of individuals – it draws breath from individual decisions, the allocation of resources and the myriad steps that make it a force of social cohesion or a site of oppression.

This conference will speak to the historic realities of the transatlantic slave trade, celebrate the accomplishments of African peoples, and heighten awareness of the complexities of current conditions for the descendants of that pivotal historic moment. The conference will use a multi-disciplinary and multi-faceted approach to address this complex legacy.

The conference is complemented by a mini film festival, an art exhibit, and a gala dinner.

Presenters and speakers that I'm looking forward to hearing are Dr. Afua Cooper, Lawrence Hill and Constance Backhouse.
