There's a fellow who lives in the next town from me here in the Valley, Nova Scotia who was just got [url=http://www.cbc.ca/canada/nova-scotia/story/2008/02/29/drug-eviction.html... from his mobile home after a police investigation found there was illegal drug activity at the home.
The man was charged by police and his case is still pending before the court. He claims he was distributing clean needles to addicts and not dealing drugs.
So how did he get evicted from his home even though his guilt or innocence hasn't been proven in a court of law? [url=http://www.gov.ns.ca/legislature/legc/bills/60th_1st/1st_read/b008.htm]The Safer communities act.[/url]

Almost word for word a similar legislation exists in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and the Yukon. As well I found [url=http://www.theguardian.pe.ca/index.cfm?sid=102757&sc=98]this, [/url] which means we you may see a version of this law in your province before long.
Alot of people are completely happy with the notion that the government can now circumvent the court system and move these n'erdowells from our neighborhoods.
I guess my question would be why. Why are we so willing to give the government powers that to any sane person are downright creepy.

On the other hand, you need something to get drug dealers out of neighbourhoods. I have a problem with kicking people out before they're convicted. I would have no problem with legislation that evicted people from government housing upon two convictions for dealing drugs. Conviction is the key... innocent until proven guilty... but after they're convicted, well...

Yes. Detox and rehab services, then training and support to obtain employment, if able bodied.
But I wonder if these self-centered neighbours are willing to see their taxes raised a litle bit to help their fellow human beings.

That will help drug addicts, which is a worthwhile cause. but we need something to get rid of the drug dealers and it needs to be punitive.

Let me see here. If a "merchant" had no customers, would he or she remain in "business"? Hmmmmm...
Now, do we address the supplier or take away the market? Hmmmm....
If we don't address the market, but punish the supplier, do we end the market? Hmmmm....

I have in my desk as we speak, a largish bag of needles, clean heroin cooking kits, pyrex crack pipes, um... and an orange I should really throw out.
I hope I don't get my employer evicted from our building.
