Whoa! Glad I'm not going out.

Maybe we'll all just sit around and try rural-Francesca's craft ideas.

I'm gonna try to make an ashtray

OMG, I love that web site Francesca, my fav is the halloween ghostie. Well, after the turkey and the toupee.

But what are "Tampax tampon vending tubes" if not the applicators? The top part as opposed to the inside slide tube?

Though in truth, they are so damn expensive today that one would not want to waste them on crafts.

After melting all day here, we are now getting more snow.

Michelle

Gee, thanks Francesca. I can die now; I've seen everything. What life wouldn't be complete without seeing this, just in time for Valentine's Day!

kind of leaves you speechless doesn't it.....

ok how about then a course in Shotgun Rules

Michelle

Ha! Where on earth do you find this stuff?

quote:

For these rules to work properly, it is essential for you to understand and accept the concept of the "Deed". Shotgun may only be called after the "deed is done". Simply stated, the deed is any activity or objective that directly precedes the ride in the automobile. The deed can be anything ranging from a visit at a friend's house, to a shopping trip at the mall, to a visit to the Grand Canyon. We cannot stress how important this is because this establishes a Shotgun-calling time frame that ensures everyone has an equal chance of recognizing when to call Shotgun.

There is no crime greater than calling Shotgun on Monday in reference to the ride to the concert on Friday. Some people choose to play this way, and they are fools.

I was in Sept-Iles for a few days, while i was there we were hit with a huge snowstorm, and that same storm hit the Lower North Shore the next day. Just got back late yesterday, and there massive piles of snow covering almost everything. It's truly depressing - just nowhere to put it if you're so inclined to shovel it away. I'll have to make a trail out in the backyard or use snowshoes. I hate winter with a passion.

Here on Quebec's Lower North Shore we had freezing rain yesterday so I played 'couch potato' all day in front of the TV and computer. Today it's warm, and a lot of melting happening. However, it's supposed to start getting cold again, overnight.

My mom was visiting Ottawa for the last week and experienced what I believe to be the full winter weather cycle here! Day 1 brought steady snow, Day 2 was sunny and freezing cold, Day 3 was cloudy and blustery, Day 4 it warmed up and rained, Day 5 the rain turned to ice, Day 6 brought snow all over again. We are now on the freezing cold and sunny part of the cycle. I keep waiting for it to break up with the introduction of spring, but there's no sign of that just yet.

I was invited to go downhill skiing today with one of our supporters, but I'd scheduled a strategic planning session with a Network I chair....so I managed to get there for lunch and that was it!

It was such a perfect day of skiing too!!!

I told them next year get me the date immediately and I'll come skiing

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

Fierce storm here all day - 80 km/h wind, blowing snow, and huge drifts everywhere. This has been such a brutal winter thus far that I'm inclined to suggest, contrary to Al Gore, that we've entered the next Ice Age.

Michelle

Sigh. More frigging snow. MAKE IT STOP!

Well, just for fun, here's a clip of the wife of a school superintendent in Virginia freaking out on the voicemail of a 17 year-old who called the superintendent at home to complain about not getting a snow day. I'd love to hear the voicemail he left for her to get her so riled up.

Damn. This forum doesn't allow HTML! I think I have to change the settings.

I wish I could win a big lottery so I could move somewhere like Vancouver. This is our worse winter ever, and tonight we supposed to get 20 cm of snow and ice pellets, see here.

mgregus

I know what you're saying. The winter this year just doesn't end! There's still a storm warning for Ottawa, though I think we got most of our snow/ice pellets overnight. Er, on second thought as I look out the window, the snow is coming down pretty heavily even now.

Stephen Gordon

Another snow day here in Quebec City. They even closed the university, which almost never happens.

This should put us over 400 cm of snow, more than double what we had last year at this time.

clersal

Blizzard here. We are expecting 30cm mixed with rain and freezing rain. It is too cold for that at the moment, -10C!

Sharon

Schools are closed all over Nova Scotia although here in Halifax, everything looks just as it looked yesterday -- mostly bare ground showing and just remnants of dirty old snow.

It's an optical illusion, however. I've been told that streets and sidewalks are treacherous and people are tumbling around out there and vehicles are sliding sideways through red lights and stop signs.

remind remind's picture

Though a bit frosty this am, it is a beautiful sunny day here on VIsland, with a slight haze over the straight of Juan de Fucca. The tree tops around the Straight are poking through the haze with the sunlit mountains in the back ground, a truly gorgeous view this am.

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

I'm very happy we have a young man for hire to help with the snow and other jobs, because it took the two of us two hours this morning to make a path through all the snow, and cut a box of wood for the furnace.

Very bad storm coming here tonight, we may lose
our power, so I'm filling the house with all the essentials for the next couple of days. At least it won't be very cold if I remember correctly the forecast.

The young man will be back tomorrow when the
storm ends, to dig me out, and to get another box
of firewood - it will get colder later on.

If the power goes out, it could a few days before
Hydro Quebec is able to get here and restore
electricity to everyone.

So it goes.

ps: I'm not supposed to lift snow, that's why I hire the young man commissioned by Quebec social services.

Stephen Gordon

This is getting out of hand.

School closings I can deal with.

But they've also closed the liquor stores, and we have no wine in the house.

The horror, the horror...

That nasty warm spell has ended and we're back to decent -20 temperatures and such. "Much better." I hate thawing dogshit season and I'm happy to see it postponed.

OOh. Good reminder. I need to do some major picking up of dog shit before the temperature rises. It's so much nicer when it's frozen! But, as any parent can attest, it's easier when you love the shitter

Oh you 2 just reminded me of the days when we had a dog, I loved to see pink green and orange flecked dog poos sitting on the snow, after she had eaten all the crayons of the kids, in those colours only for some reason!

Wilf Day

I was just watching CBC showing a woman and young children stranded trying to get to North Carolina since last night.

Sad. If she had given up on the airlines and taken the Via Train to New York this morning -- assuming there were any seats left on it -- she could have stayed the night in New York tonight and take Amtrak to North Carolina tomorrow morning (again if there were any seats left) arriving early afternoon, while her fellow passengers will apparently still be stranded at Pearson.

I'm sort of glad I'm on long term disability, because flying all winter used to be such a pain - I often got 'stuck' here, there, and everywhere due to winter weather. I'm happy just to remain in one place now.

clersal

Since Thursday the weather people have been warning about a big two day snow storm(Saturday and Sunday) that was going to hit just about all of Quйbec.

This morning it was beautiful and sunny right into the afternoon. I took a short nap, woke up and the snow had hit the fan!

It is now midnight the announced 30cms has already fallen and we have Sunday to go.

At one point in the evening it sounded like freezing rain was hitting the windows. I found this odd as it was -10C. It was though and at one point I thought I saw lightening. That too didn't make any sense but the dog was acting scared to death as he does with thunder storms but I didn't hear thunder. There defintely was lightening though so the dog was right.

There is so much bloody snow it is awful. I think my son is going to have to clean the roof again. Sheesh I hate winter.

Michelle

I just heard on the news that this latest storm dumped 49 cm on us yesterday and overnight!

But the IWD march went on anyhow in Toronto! "Women marching in the snow / Telling Harper where to go!" was my favorite chant of the day.

Okay, I fixed the settings on this and ALL forums (there were only a couple of others where it wasn't set to accept HTML code). So now I can post it:

The snowbanks created from the plowing of all the snow that fell this weekend are HUGE! There's a picnic table in my building's backyard and even that's completely covered under a massive pile of snow. How many weeks until spring again??

Here we are in Calgary with a high cloud cover and a temperature on the way to 13 degrees. The slight hint of fresh moisture in the air reminds us that spring is on the way. The heaters have been turned off on the CTrains. The bar patios are opening up.

Despite all that, the skiing is still excellent and the mountains are laden with snow, promising us a lush and verdant summer.

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

Michelle, could you please ban Calgaryites from this thread, too?

I've got a six foot high snowdrift running the length of my property. Every year, we don't see the grass until at least the first week of May. This year, because of all the @#$%^&!!! snow, we likely won't see grass until the end of May or first week of June, unless we get quite a warm rainy spell.

We've now established a winter record for snowfall in Quebec City: 460 cm, and more to come.

The snowbanks are now higher than when I took

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

460 cm = 181 inches/15 feet. Wow! I think you've got us beat, dude, although we do have a lot of snow here, but no one has measured it.

Stephen Gordon

Those numbers are for accumulated snowfall throughout the winter. Lots of it is packed down or melted, so we don't actually have 15' of snow all over the place.

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

Same here. We have at least four feet of snow still on the ground in many places, including almost the full length of my property. My truck's roof is visible today although most of it is covered in a huge drift.

mgregus

The contest for biggest snowbank/drift is one I'd love to lose. The picnic table hasn't made any sign of re-emerging so far; the snowdrift in the back is uniform, and must be approaching 3 feet. The real place to find giant snowbanks here in Ottawa are the city streets, which are lined with towering cliff-like banks left behind by the plows. Actually, all this snow reminds me of growing up in Newfoundland, where it was normal to have snowdrifts covering your first-level/bungalow windows in an average winter. I've grown soft, I tell ya!

HeywoodFloyd

It's 11 degrees and heading to 13 here in the Heart of the New West.

I think I'll be on the patio for lunch today, with a bucket of Big Rock to work through.

oldgoat

Heywood, the calamatous ill that I am currently wishing upon you all out there in "the new heart of the Dominion" is interdicted only by the fact that my sister, of whom I am quite fond and is an NDPer, lives in Millarville.

I may have to suspend your account.

HeywoodFloyd

Heck, she's just down the road from me on Hwy 22. I bet she's contemplating washing her car or something. She could do that in a t-shirt and shorts should she desire.

hmm. Shorts. Now there's an idea.

oldgoat

HEY! You just stop thinking about my sister in shorts and a tshirt!!!

HeywoodFloyd

mmmm. What? Sorry.

Was just thinking of my sweetie in spring wear.

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

Last week was sunny and cold. Today begins a week of sunny, warmer temps, finally!

It's March, though, so I would be cautious about thinking this nice weather will last beyond this week. For the past few years, we've always had terrible winter storms near the end of this month.

So that's how you make a really large snowman.

At the end it looked like that one elephant was trying for a giant snow angel. Elephants frolicking in the snow - who would have thought?
