It's The Wife's Fault
from a woman's blog

Funny how that goes. Laura Schlessinger (a conservative weirdo radio talk show host) tells us that Eliot Spitzer's use of prostitutes is his wife's fault:

Today, right-wing radio host Dr. Laura Schlessinger appeared on NBC's Today Show in a segment called "Why do men cheat?" Schlessinger argued that Gov. Eliot Spitzer (D) cheated because his wife failed "make him feel like a man":

"When the wife does not focus in on the needs and the feelings - sexually, personally - to make him feel like a man, to make him feel like a success, to make him feel like her hero, he's very susceptible to the charm of some other woman."

Yah. Schlessinger also wrote a book about the proper care and feeding of husbands. The gist of it is that you feed the beast and then you fuck the beast and that's it. And people call feminists man-haters!

Why do I bother to write about this? Because her point of view is one based on seeing marriage as an employment contract: The man hires a wife, as a house servant, child producer and prostitute. If he goes elsewhere for his sexual needs, it's his wife's fault, because she didn't perform properly. That this is a one-side view is easily seen by noticing that, in Schlessinger's world, men don't have to work to make their wive's feel like heroines so that they wouldn't stray. If they stray they are violating the labor contract.

A long time ago some conservatives were outraged that a writer dared to compare marriage to a long-term sexual favors contract. Yet that seems to be the way Schlessinger thinks about marriage. Well, who knows how she thinks about anything. She gets publicity because she disses women. That's always worth money."

Well bleh...and another bleh....

Don't have the energy to swear right now....

The main thing I hate about reading this stuff, beside it being utter crap, is that it reminds me of all the times in my life I've come across and had to deal with this 'the female should be subservient and if we're not we're failing at our 'job' meme and it's pisses me off and I get all moody.
It's no fricken wonder that we still have to deal with that sort of crap when it's still so mainstream like this...AND comes from a woman.
Guld durnit!

Just the last week I had some guy on a discussion board come out and say point blank that to him my arguments meant nothing because 'eve ate the apple'.
I got him back though and made him look like the idiot he was. I made another account, signed in under a 'male' sounding name, got him to discuss and even agree on some things...and then did a big reveal. "Shove that one up your crocker big boy..you agreed with a woman!!"

Ya, I hear you EQ, one gets really sick of entrenched male notions of privilege, just last week, while visiting a friend, a couple of male neighbours of hers stopped by, and interrupted our conversation and visit. Why? Cause they were "bored", as they stated, and thought they "would drop by and see us". We both stared at them in disbelief, that they felt because they were bored, they had every right to stop by, unannounced, and "allow" us to entertain them.

A condescending belief that we females would feel blessed by having males wanting us to entertain them, in this day and age, was quite unimaginable to me, until that point anyway. Out of polite new neighbourliness, and a willingness to give benefit of doubt that it was not male privilege at work, they were not told to fuck off, until 5 minutes into the impromptu visit, when they made racist, sexist and bigoted remarks in 2 sentences or less.

Ugh Remind,
I have to wonder whether in my younger days when I was less nieve that that sort of thing happened without me even realizing what was actually going on. I expect it did. I honestly didn't realize until I got a little older and wiser how much of this sort of thing still happens. I was quite oblivious until my twenties. It still catches me off guard sometimes, though the difference is now I don't just let it go...without doing something. Like that little internet gender switcharoo...to at least get the point across even if it is in a small way.

Another good one which I did feel enacted a certain sense of justice happened at work one time I and a male colleague were interviewing people to be our reps in a labor negotiation. We had this one guy, who happened to be the most experienced and who came with the best recommendations in terms of his 'success'. During the interview I started to notice that whenever I asked a question, he would direct his answer at the male collegue and discuss it with him. At first I was thinking, "Nah...couldn't be" but it kept happening over and over. Honestly I was rather dumbfounded and started to go over in my mind how I was going to broach this with my collegue...because as far as the actual content of the interview went he was good...
In my mind I was thinking..'great now not only do I have to deal with this a*s I'm going to have to explain to my collegue why he was an a*s yadda yadda' *big sigh*
Well I didn't have to because as soon as he left my collegue turned to me and said, "Cripes did you notice that you'd ask a question and he'd only answer to me! Whadda jerk. I don't know about you but I don't want to have anything to do with that crap."
So anyways not only didn't we hire him, we both crafted a polite and diplomatic letter of rejection of how we both thought he was perfect on pretty well all accounts, except for one glaring problem. Then at the end we politely informed him that we found another candidate and let it slip that this candidate just also happened to be a woman.

I'm going to make a wild stab here, but I expect that in his mind, it was completely my fault that he didn't get the job.
