How dare they celebrate the worst that Canada has to offer?

To...' Baird, CBC's Layfield make list of top young global leaders

quote:

Canada's environment minister and CBC Television's programming director are among four Canadians named as young global leaders by the World Economic Forum.

The list of 245 executives, public figures and intellectuals under the age of 40 was released on Tuesday. [...]

Baird, 38, said he is honoured to receive the award.

"Like the World Economic Forum, our government recognizes that climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing the world today," he said in a statement. "We have demonstrated leadership by taking real action both at home and on the world's stage to tackle this issue." [...]

Previous Canadian recipients include MPs Scott Brison, Rona Ambrose and Belinda Stronach.

Sorry if I've spoiled anyone's supper.

Other 2008 recipients include the king of Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuck; Queen Lalla Salma of Morocco; CNN host and reporter Anderson Cooper; actor Leonardo DiCaprio; Afghan Human Rights Commission head Ahmad Nader Nadery; and professional skateboarder Tony Hawk.

Who are you to say a skateboarder can't make the world a better place?

But seriously, what a pointless honour. I imagine Alan Eagleson and Conrad Black have garages full of these "kudos for being rich and famous" awards.

Sgt. Jason Boyes blew himself up yesterday in Panjwaii district, shortly after arriving in Afghanistan.

I'm not mourning this latest loss:

quote:

The Manitoba-based soldier who is Canada's latest fatality in Afghanistan was "a committed warrior" and "a leader through and through," according to his battle group's commander. ...

"He was someone we can all emulate. He represented the warrior spirit 100 per cent." ...

[Regimental Sgt.-Maj. Brian Semenko said:] "His idea was not to give candy to children, but to kill insurgents."

Gov. Gen. Michaлlle Jean said Boyes "deserves our respect and admiration" ...

Well, as the song says, looks like Sgt. Boyes ain't gonna study war no mo'.
