The federal Conservatives have quietly killed an access to information registry used by journalists, experts and the public that users say helped hold the government accountable.

The Coordination of Access to Information Requests System, or CAIRS, is an electronic list of nearly every access to information request filed to federal departments and agencies.

Originally created in 1989, it was used as an internal tool to keep track of requests and co-ordinate the government's response between agencies to potentially sensitive information released.

Now, users mine the database to do statistical studies, fine tune phrasing on new requests and discover obscure documents — often using the information against the government.

"It was really a tool designed to make government more open," said CBC investigative journalist David McKie.

"Now that it appears as though this is no longer going to be available it is very disappointing indeed and people are really wondering what the real motivation is."

Last week, a notice to civil servants from Treasury Board stated that effective April 1, "the requirement to update CAIRS is no longer in effect."

The pundits on Newman's show were talking about this last night - Rob Russo said it's a pretty outrageous move, while Don Martin said he himself never used the registry.

Don Martin doesn't need to use the registry. He just summarizes the latest PMO talking points.

I've usually found Don Martin to be a good commentator on the Politics broadcast, as critical of Harper as anyone else.

When the Liberals replace dion with a leader with guts and integrity.

Dion is a weakling who is scared of his own shadow

That's a flippant comment. Care to back it up with examples?

Well, I don't recall signing up to be your personal researcher, but here are a few recent examples. Feel free to make up your own mind.

That shill Martin is so over the top in the last story that he likens showing footage of the RCMP raid on Conservative HQ regarding illegal excessive campaign spending to "a gas chamber [of] the innocent".

Yup. According to Martin, showing such film is like the Nazis carrying out the Holocaust. I couldn't make this shit up if I tried to.

Seriously he is nearly in the harper cabinet. The only person that is on that show that might be closer to harper than him is Anderson, and that is because he USE TO BE an MP in the reform party!

Don Martin is more-so than even barbara yaffe or andrew coine. Just listen to what he says, it is more the most part positive spin for the cons every friday on politics, despite what don newman says, the spin does start there. For a Liberal example of the same person look at susan delacourt from the star. She always does the liberal spin. I would like to see kady o'malley on there or one of the progressives like linda m, rick s, or t walkom
