Woman Fired for giving Baby a Timbit

Tim Hortons can send a store to Afghanistan, but they can't spare 16 cents to brighten the day of a toddler and her mother.

A 27-year old single mother of 4 in London, Ontario was fired for giving away a timbit:

quote:

Giving a free Timbit to a baby has cost a single mother of four her job.

Nicole Lilliman, 27, was fired Wednesday from her Tim Hortons job in this southwestern Ontario city for giving one of the 16-cent blobs of fried dough to a tot who came in with a regular customer.

“I have been fired for giving a baby a Timbit,” Ms. Lilliman said Wednesday.

“It was just out of my heart — she was pointing and going ‘ah, ah. . .' I should have gone to my purse and got the change, but it was busy.”

[...]

She'd forgotten about the Monday-morning incident until she was called into the office Wednesday.

Three managers greeted her, saying she had been caught on video, giving free food to a child.

I know I won't be going to Tim Hortons any time soon. I hope nobody else here will either.
That's disgusting.
Next time they wrap themselves in the flag and say how Canadian they are and how they are so integrated with the Canadian experience and identity - someone should tell them to start by acting human.
Since the labour board does not have any teeth in this province, at least consumers should respond somehow.
This is not new for Horny Tims. I had someone in my house working there. They routinely would call anywhere from 3 or 6 in the morning asking them if they wanted to come in for a shift. A couple times I answered the phone and said that I had been woken up and had worked till almost midnight the night before but the manager did not care and never apologized. I called head office and explained that we could not explain just how we felt to the manager since it could affect the employment of someone in our house (I did not say where I was coming from) but that if this practice existed all across the province there must be a lot of people mad at Hortons. I went on to say at the wage they pay, their employees do not live alone and most would be sharing either in shared accommodation arrangements or with family. Even if they did not respect their employees having manners with the general public tends to be good for business. I have heard from others that our experience was not unique.
this is an organization that does a lot of advertising but lacks leadership at the top for policies that would make them reasonable employers.

From the link:

quote:

The Timbits given to pets, Ms. Mitchell added, are usually "day-old and recycled."

I really don't want to know what a "recycled timbit" is, I reallllly don't.

Good reason to boycott.

I really feel as though there is an underlying story that isn't being told here. Seems like Tim Hortons was possibly looking for an excuse to fire this woman, and used this as a cowardly out. I know the Tim Horton's in my neighbourhood offers my dogs Timbits every time they happen to be in the car on the rare occasion I go through the drive-through.

There's two parallel threads going here. They're both good, but how'bout we go with the one in Labour and Consumption.

Two threads on the same topic, started mere minutes apart! What to do, what to do?

Since this one is slightly older, I will close this one, even though it has a funny joke from moi. Please continue the discussion h...
