McCain wants to end access to safe abortion
quote:
John McCain believes Roe v. Wade is a flawed decision that must be overturned, and as president he will nominate judges who understand that courts should not be in the business of legislating from the bench.Constitutional balance would be restored by the reversal of Roe v. Wade, returning the abortion question to the individual states. The difficult issue of abortion should not be decided by judicial fiat.
However, the reversal of Roe v. Wade represents only one step in the long path toward ending abortion. Once the question is returned to the states, the fight for life will be one of courage and compassion - the courage of a pregnant mother to bring her child into the world and the compassion of civil society to meet her needs and those of her newborn baby. The pro-life movement has done tremendous work in building and reinforcing the infrastructure of civil society by strengthening faith-based, community, and neighborhood organizations that provide critical services to pregnant mothers in need. This work must continue and government must find new ways to empower and strengthen these armies of compassion. These important groups can help build the consensus necessary to end abortion at the state level. As John McCain has publicly noted, "At its core, abortion is a human tragedy. To effect meaningful change, we must engage the debate at a human level."
What a scum bag...

WTF does that even mean? I suppose this poetic phrasing is supposed to be the "reasoning" behind McCain's selective accusation that judges enact laws from the bench robotically, without imput from anyone else.
McCain wasn't always a liar who was publically in favor of freedom of choice, though he was ALWAYS a liar, in my opinion.
When McCain was mounting his first presidential bid in 1999, he said "Certainly in the short-term, or even the long-term, I would not support repeal of Roe v. Wade. Why not? Because without Roe, thousands of young American women would be performing illegal and dangerous operations.

Hard to tell what you were trying to say in your post Robes. Inp articular, this snippet below, makes it hard to decern what you were/are meaning.

Anyhow McCain is deeply misogynistic, and there really can't be any doubt he is part of the group who would have women's equality rights stripped.

Why? Theres's a big clue in my first paragraph, lol.
Anyway I mean he's a horrible opportunist who'll say any damn thing necessary to get votes.
So are you trying to say that he is only saying he would appeal Roe Vs Wade, but would not, just so he can get fundie votes?
I really hope that this, if nothing else, convinces p.o.'d Clinton supporters to abandon any thought of voting for this doofus out of a misguided whatever about the "leftness" of Obama. Or the Green Party for that matter. Any non-McCain vote is a vote not for McCain!
And, Stargazer, a comment about the thread title. McCain doesn't want to end abortion, he wants to end access to safe and legal abortions. We all know that whether abortions are safe and legal or not, women will have them, and when abortions are illegal women risk their lives to have them.
P.S. I didn't know the link was to his actual site! I feel tainted now. Ick.

No. McCain seems pretty wed to the idea of repealing the pro-choice laws, and I'd expect him to support if not initiate himself renewed and harder attacks on this most basic of civil rights.
