I took up smoking cigarettes when I was 16 or 17 completely due to peer pressure - I never liked the habit. I then went to cigars and pipes in an effort to blend in, and finally gave up smoking altogether by the time I was 25. I'm 58 now, so that was 33 years ago. I think smoking is one of the dumbest things human beings can do, and I've felt that way for a long time.

You should do some research on addictions. Blaming smokers or crack heads for being stupid or dumb is tells me you don't get what addiction means to people. If it was an intellectual exercise then there would be few smokers but it is far more complex than that.
I quit almost 11 years ago mow. I smoked from age 11 to 46. What I have read points to tobacco being harder to kick as an addiction the earlier you get hooked.

Yes, I've seen a lot of tobacco addicts in my lifetime, but there's still people (mostly youngsters) who take it up just to be cool. That's dumb in my book.

PhD Devra Davis(Pennsylvania), author of, The Secret History of the War on Cancer, says it is impossible to make choices without accessible and accurate information. Some of the Nazi scientists brought to North America in the 1940's did research on tobacco and various industrial solvents and chemicals in the 1920's and 30's. They knew about carcinogens and the effects on human health a long time ago.

Unfortunately, I still am. Thanks for posting that FM. It helps to motivate me towards quitting again.
I was basically smoking my whole life from birth til now because our parents always smoked in the house, in the car with the window up, etc. People smoked in public spaces. My 3 siblings and I all smoke and can never seem to permanently kick it.
I think as people slowly get the message, smoking will eventually be mostly eliminated.
A good reason to try quitting again. [img]smile.gif" border="0[/img]

I started smoking after an 11 year smoke free period. I started after a traumatic incident I saw (a kid was shot on the back steps of my place). Seeing that kid lying in a puddle of his own blood was far too much to handle, especially considering he was only 21 years old and a daddy. But to the newspapers, he was a person "known to police" but that's for a whole other thread.
I plan on quitting asap since it is interfering in my gym routine and my life in general.
