Well that is a ridiculous thing to focus on. She can take a plane flight whenever she damn well pleases.

Certainly capital-F feminists won't be impressed but the "blue-collar" working women who almost put Hillary over the top might be, as will their husbands. She is a working mom with a narrative that rivals obama for inspiration. For the next few days the news cycle will be filled with background stories about this inspiring woman and her interesting story and punditry about how brave McCain was for making this outside-the-box choice. Democrats are likely crapping their pants/looking for dirt.

On abortion, she will argue that she is a Feminist for Life and while that won't impress the Andrea Dworkins of the world I think the silent majority that is generally but not passionately pro-choice will find her more compelling than repelling.

Hope I'm wrong. The Democrats had better get to work immediately to brand this woman.

Should we continue this conversation about Palin h... and leave this thread to discuss the Republican Convention when it happens? Don't want to stifle discussion, but there's not much point in having two parallel discussions about the same thing, and probably this veep pick is important enough for its own thread...?

Interesting though that a campaign that's focussing on "experience" has picked such a green running-mate. I think this will undermine McCain's argument that experience matters.

I won't be watching this convention at all, because I'm afraid I'd put my foot through my nice new TV.

I'm wondering just how hideous John McCain might look on HDTV especially as contrasted with a former beauty queen.

It makes his shit-eating grin look even more hideous, if that's possible.

Toby Keith actually declared he was a democrat a couple of weeks ago. Heck, pigs are beginning to take flight.

Romney and Pawlenty are plenty pissed right now for being used as decoys in this whole VP selection thing. Interesting.

Sarah Palin's petty political scandals are also coming up, including the shadow that her husband has been casting in government during her time as governor.

Anyone watching now?

Mitt Romney is trashing the "Liberal elite" in the east of the country. Guess they've given up on the Hillary Clinton voters they've been trying to woo with Palin!

Michelle

Okay, I have to admit, this was a good line on Romney:

"I have one more suggestion to reduce climate change: Let's keep Al Gore's private jet on the ground."

Of course, he's a racist fuckwad otherwise:

"Radical violent Islam is evil and [McCain] will defeat it."

Yeah, but you bloodthirsty fundamentalist Christians are a-okay, right?

I think this cartoon is as appropriate now as it was nine years ago:

I guess you're just giving us the news but Agent 204's cartoon and LEFT JAB's link bother me.

Bookish Agrarian

Why is that?

RevolutionPlease RevolutionPlease's picture

I should have explained better, it's drifting to attach gays to rethuglicans.

remind remind's picture

So Palin's speech is supposed to be on right now where she mocks Obama, anyone listening to her?

RevolutionPlease RevolutionPlease's picture

I just tuned in, Palin's not on yet. (PBS)

BA, I just don't like people using a fringe group supporting the Rethugs to take a shot at disadvantaged people. Save it for the white men clearing the planet.

I don't know what it was doing here.

Because Mitt Romney and John McCain don't have private jets...

Um, no. It's a group of gay Republicans. The point is that it doesn't make any sense for anyone who is gay to back the Republicans. I'm not sure what you're taking from the link and the cartoon.

Bookish Agrarian

I am listening to Rudi. What a bunch of god damn hypocrties. 4 years ago they were doing everything they could to dismiss and diminish the war record of a decorated Vietnam vet and war hero. Now the Repugs are using the fact McCain is a war hero as his primary qualification. God they make me sick.

What point did it add? It's most likely a veiled shot. Why not point to the much worse groups, who in fact, threaten gay people?

Sorry to be sensitive. Always have been, always will.

It's the type of joke I hear from ignorant friends and don't like. It relates on so many levels.

Wow. Drill Baby Now?

Bookish Agrarian

Well you are taking that way different than me. I took to mean that the Log Cabin Republicans are like REAL Women in Canada in that they are actively working agaisnt their own interests. I see absolutely no anti-gay shot in there anywhere, only anit-Repiblican. It becomes obvious by the comment that they would never, ever be allowed to speak from the stage. That is an observation that is directly related to the convention.

Bookish Agrarian

Palin is speaking. I expected her to be better. She is off on her delivery. Very bad rythm at this point.

Bookish Agrarian

Palin is really creeping me out.

Michelle

Really? I think she's doing really well. I mean, for her audience, you know.

Oh boy - a zinger!

"Being a mayor of a small town is kind of like being a community organizer - except with real responsibilities."

Ouch.

And all the speakers are really getting Obama on his flip-flops. The same ones we've been talking about here.

I don't think it will appeal to middle America. I think the Republicans have hit the wrong message they are being attack dogs, all of them and I think that will turn people off. Not to mention they are making stuff up that will allow the other side to run ads attacking their honesty.

Her eyes seem dead that's what creeps me out.

Bookish Agrarian

It's sort of like she is a parody of a parody the way she delivers things. I was honestly expecting more from her.

Bookish Agrarian

Lord help the world if this women ever becomes President because McCain kicks the bucket. She scares the shit out of me. Her eyes are just dead, dead, dead.

It's the first real smacks we've seen at Obama himself in this campaign. We'll see how it plays. I'm not so sure "middle America" wasn't waiting for that.

Bookish Agrarian

We'll see. I think it was way too much of a home crowd speech and it will make a lot of people think about partisan bickering. It also undermines McCain's bi-partisan message nonsense.

Michelle

Oh my! That rendition of the Star Spangled Banner was ear-splitting! The guy was always slightly out of tune, and the woman's voice cracked on the high note! Ha!

Michelle

I don't know, BA. I think there was just as much sniping at the Republicans during the Democratic convention. And there were a few funny cheap shots too. It's just part of the game.

The question is, did Obama leave himself open to some of the more substantial attacks? Sure, we're partisan and don't like Republicans so we have all sorts of arguments against it. But I do think the Democrats left themselves open to some of it.

Anyhow, BA, I completely disagree with you on Palin's speech. I think she couldn't have done any better than that. She was strong, connected with the audience (and not just die-hard Republicans, I don't think), and while I didn't agree with what she was saying, I saw the populist appeal behind it.

Bookish Agrarian

I think the Repugs have taken it to a whole lower level in the way they have done it.

My partner walked through the living room and said, 'wow she's a terrible speaker' and then walked back out. That took about 120 seconds. I think a lot of people will be put off because she went just that little bit too far. It is a delicate line between getting your shots in and being seen to be an attacking. People will put up with the former and not the latter.

But who knows maybe they'll get away with it with a pro-Republican media.

Scott Piatkowski Scott Piatkowski's picture

Watching the Republican convention is like a window into a bizarre, scary alternate universe.

Can these people really be that deluded?

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

A pundit on CNN today said Palin will be making the rounds of the GOP base - christian fundies - over the next few weeks until the debates start, to keep her away from the major pundit shows such as Face The Nation. Guess the GOP is afraid she'll f*ck up when experienced people ask the hard probing questions.

Michelle

I think all the speakers sound incredibly scripted because they are. And they have this way of speaking, where they annunciate every word and they sound very deliberate as opposed to conversational. I've noticed that American politicians are much more into that style than we are here.
