New Supreme Court justice appointed, but not under new process

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has nominated Nova Scotia appeal judge Thomas Cromwell to sit on the Supreme Court of Canada.

The Friday announcement – which bypasses an all-party selection committee just two days ahead of an election call – will fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Justice Michel Bastarache.

I wouldn't know enough to say this is a good pick or not, but I don't think it's a good thing that Stephen Harper promised a more open process for selecting Supreme Court justices and then doesn't bother to use it.

On the choice of Cromwell itself:

Frankly, this seems like not too bad a result given the parameters (Harper government, replacement of Bastarache [from the very cursory "research" I just did, he appears to be less conservative than Bastarache]).

Hopefully, the choice of bilingual Cromwell will also help put an end to the "OMG! How are we going to find competent candidates if we're to require SCC judges to be bilingual!?!?" inanities.
