Quebec Liberal candidate resigns over Oka comments

A Quebec City Liberal candidate has resigned after proposing the army should have used lethal force to end the Oka crisis.

Bedard, a former radio host, proposed at the time of the 1990 Oka crisis that the army use force to lift Mohawk Warrior barricades, even if that meant as many as 150 deaths.

This week he told Quebec City's Le Soleil daily newspaper that, "maybe we should have done it because 17 years later, it's still the same."

Bedard withdrew the remarks on Wednesday, and the party announced a news conference on Thursday where, it said, he would explain himself. But reporters who arrived for the news conference in a suburban mall were informed it had been put off to an unspecified future date.

Hours later, Dion announced Bedard's resignation.

Though martin had this in another thread on Harper, I think it deserves its own thread, considering the enormity of the words.

So, I guess this riding is pretty much a wash out for the Liberals, and will stay in Bloq hands, with their having to get a new candidate and new signs, ads etc, if they even bother.

Does this give the NDP a chance to make some kind of a showing in this riding?

Also, why the hell did the Liberals nominate this wackjob in the first place? It's not possible that they didn't know he was a FN-hating maniac.

Or is it possible that they figured his mindset was what the voters wanted?

I can believe either.

I looked at the riding stats for last election the NDP was 4th. It is a Bloq riding with the Liberals running 3rd.

Even if the Liberal vote was gone, and went solidly to the NDP, we would be behind the CPC by about 2000 votes and be half way to the Nloq voting numbers.

They are scraping the bottom of the barrel?

Ricardo Lopez, the instant-Tory who held Montreal’s south-shore Chвteauguay for the Mulroney Conservatives and suggested Mohawks be deported to Labrador, is making a comeback try as the Liberal candidate in Beauharnois-Salaberry riding.

Lopez was elected in the Tory sweeps of the province in 1984 and 1988 but lost in 1993 when the Bloc Quйbйcois triumphed. He was an unsuccessful Canadian Alliance Candidate in 2000.

Lopez, who was born in Spain, suggested the Mohawk deportation at the time of the 1990 Oka Crisis, when tensions were high between the non-natives of Chвteauguay and its neighbouring Mohawk community in Kahnawake.

Hopefully before the weekend....it came up yesterday here, but no one seemed to want to get into action over it. mMybe creeping incrementalism is working?
