Does anyone know if they have tried to receive government assistance to stay afloat? The NDP has no chance in my riding, but this could tie in to the larger issues of arts cuts.

Bitch Magazine is based in the United States.
They receive no government funding, and have limited advertising to ensure their content is independent and autonomous. They've been around for 13 years, an incredible accomplishment for an independent feminist magazine.

I don't think that the American gov't subsidises like the candian gov't does- but then that would compromise their independence maybe.

Hey, I came here to post the same thing but you all beat me to it! Glad to hear word's getting around so that they get as many donations as possible. I made my donation this morning and have my fingers crossed that their weiner dog will stretch quickly to the 40K mark. I've been buying this magazine for years and it definitely ranks up there as one of my favorites.

I have e-mailed the BITCH staff to ask how much they would charge for as full a set as possible of their amazing 41 [b][url=http://bitchmagazine.org/issues]back issues[/url][/b].
Now if each of us could convince a local community or college librarian that this publication is EXACTLY what women/girls need to research emerging issues (listing them helps)... a number of orders of their back pages could bring in a tidy sum, not to mention all the new subscriptions from those libraries.
Whaddaya think? Every province and territory has an association of librarians that can lend a hand by giving you lists of addresses, but nothing does it like walking up to these people yourself.
