CRTC complaint filed for reporting on Laibar Singh

This action pleases me immensely. I was particularly incensed by the aggressive insistence of Rick Clough's holiday stand-in (whose name escapes me)in using the word "illegal" even after the person he was interviewing had gone to great length to clarify of Laibar Singh's legal status when he arrived in Canada.

One can understand, though it by no means mitigates their culpability, the commercial stations operating under some corporate agenda of their own, but for CBC to be creating a misconception which promotes intolerance in our society is astounding.

I came to Canada in 1981 in search of a democratic humane country that I expected to be radically different to Apartheid South Africa that I was born into. It is very unsettling to realize how flimsy the vaneer of a just society can be. We need to be wary of saving what we have and building on it. What this group is doing in going to the CRTC is reassuring.

there's a thousand reasons to complain about the CBC (a pro harper, pro bush, pro war pro corporate entity) yet outta all that there's a complaint to CRTC over something said about some illegal immigrant, or whatever his status is, and that squeak gets the grease? Fascism is coming, in expensive suits/ties, ferchrissakes, and wasting the CRTC time on bs about some individual who is going to cost the Canadian Medical system a fortune, and whom the authorities legally wants gone...just seems to empowers the very fascists who are the real threat. Canada citizenship is a privilege, not an entitlement, to the 6 billions humans who aren't Canadian

Bravo Judy Rebick et al.

quote:

"The repetition of an inaccuracy in the media is one of the worst examples of how media framing can impact on legal proceedings. The impact of the falsehood that Laibar Singh entered Canada illegally cannot be overestimated. This error must be corrected and the media held accountable. A man's life may be at stake," stated Rebick.

"The biggest problem with media inaccuracies has to do with situations such as this, when real humans are being hurt by what the media says," Simonton agreed.

I agree that there are many complaints to be filed with the CRTC for their media bias. Still, it is heart warming to see this.

I have not seen a single valid reason to deport this man. Harper's anti-immigration stance is slowly poisoning our national perspective imho.

Expect a circling of the media's wagons.

quote:

Jeffries concluded, "The news media has an enormous influence on framing public debates and it is vital that it adheres to its own stated commitment to accuracy and responsible reporting of the facts. This complaint seeks to hold the news media to its public responsibility."

"The media has absolutely no influence on the electoral process or the results." How often have you heard words to that effect? Yeah, right.

On the only occasion that I had to complain to the CRTC, my complaint was dealt with seriously. It was to do with a talk show moderator subscribing to the theory that AIDS had resulted from Africans copulating with monkeys.

there are millions of little homeless children in the world in need of compassion- if we are going to, let's bring a homeless kid here, a little doomed orphan girl, a frigging planeload, whynot ...using harper's slobberings to cover/sneak a grasping old man past the cops ....the harperites are glorying on the optics of it. And that's ok is it?

"Some illegal immigrant"? Did you even BOTHER to read the press release?? He's NOT an "illegal immigrant". That's the whole point.

There is something very crispy about the irony encapsulated in this statement. However:

quote:

Now this has optics that that will crack the most resilient sceptic. Besides the fact that a severely debilitated old man has no less of a claim to human dignity and respect than any of the homeless children scattered throughout the world who are homeless because their country has been pillaged in order to provide Canadians (amongst the rest of the OECD privileged) with their entitlements, clandestiny is amusing himself through the device of completely missing the point of the whole exercise. It is not about the merits of Laibar Singh or the billion people living in the squalor provided by the World Bank; it is about the deliberate lies and fatal mischief-making of the media that serves the ruling in various ways, including wipping up xenophobic hysteria to divide working people from working people.

It is about all the lies, like those that brought us the invasion of Afghanistan by the Russians and later by Nato, and the invasion of Iraq and the demonization of the Palestinians and Islam to name just a few recent examples. Our local media even tried to malign the teachers of BC in 2005 when the acted in concert with the provincial government in the service of neo-liberalism. It simply was particularly egregious and obvious in this most recent example involving Laibar Singh. It is a very clear case of irresponsible lies than can be easily demonstrated and so it makes sense to make a case out of something that is likely to succeed.

Laibar Singh was not considered illegal by the Canadian authorities when he entered Canada and he worked legally until he was no longer able to work. The media kept claiming that he entered the country illegally and the consequence of those lies is that people like clandestiny are given the opportunity to speak insultingly of the man and babble on about the privilege of being a Canadian sponge of global wealth.

now now Dorito- you're not being polite! As you know, sugar catches flies while vinegar... doesn't catch ..them...flies(?) You're lovely to comm. with and all that, but spittle flying from your face suggests too much of the Sarah Palin influence, and the busheviki era is going going...almost gone! So a bit of mara-juwanna might do you good, moodwise. But not too much cheesy pops snaxks when hunger kicks in okay
lol...
