Palin - Obama "palling around with terrorists"

Stargazer

Just when I thought this venomous vermin count not get any lower, Palin again out does herself in Rethuglican nastiness:

quote:

US Republican vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin has accused the Democratic presidential candidate, Barack Obama, of associating with terrorists.

She said he had been "palling around" with an ex-member of US-based militant group Weather Underground, which opposed the Vietnam War in the 1960s.

And of course, there is Obama who has "denounced its activities."

Ken Burch

Who knew the Weather Underground still HAS activities?

Still, they were a bad bunch and denouncing what they used to get up to really doesn't harm anything.
It'll probably eventually turnout that Weather was a CIA-created black op designed to discredit that actual antiwar movement.

Polunatic2

It might be interesting to make of list of McCain's past associates - like Saddam Hussein, Ferdinand Marcos and other dictators like Somoza - well maybe McCain isn't that old.

Ken Burch

You're right about that.

I guess my feeling on this specific issue is that, since the Weather Underground were a tiny, ugly, unrepresentative section of antiwar activism, and since their tactic of blowing stuff up for symbolic value was an utter failure at stopping the Vietnam War(and probably helped reelect Nixon)I don't have any problem with Obama denouncing them.

It's not a sellout of anything, really.

ElizaQ ElizaQ's picture

Pretty sure this is from the same rally. She appears to be on some sort of role.

quote:

At a rally on Saturday in California, Sarah Palin offered up a rather jarring argument for supporting the Republican ticket. "There's a place in Hell reserved for women who don't support other women," the Alaska Governor said, claiming she was quoting former Clinton Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.

The statement came after Palin had recounted a "providential" moment she experienced on Saturday: "I'm reading on my Starbucks mocha cup, okay? The quote of the day... It was Madeleine Albright, former Secretary of State [crowd boos] and UN ambassador. ... Now she said it, I didn't. She said, 'There's a place in Hell reserved for women who don't support other women.'"

Actually, Albright didn't say that. The accurate quote is, "There's a place in Hell reserved for women who don't help other women." (Sources made the same point to CBS's Scott Conroy.)
------------------
Albright responded to Palin's remarks in a statement to the Huffington Post on Sunday. "Though I am flattered that Governor Palin has chosen to cite me as a source of wisdom, what I said had nothing to do with politics. This is yet another example of McCain and Palin distorting the truth, and all the more reason to remember that this campaign is not about gender, it is about which candidate has an agenda that will improve the lives of all Americans, including women. The truth is, if you care about the status of women in our society and in our troubled economy, the best choice by far is Obama-Biden."

It's no accident that McCarthyism was invented by Republicans. This is just another guilt by association variant of that.

I wonder if McCain ever chummed around with that Cuban guy in Miami who bombed the Cuban airline killing many people?

You betcha, indeedy... Ya gotta steer clear of anyone who associates with dangerous evil-doers. That's why McCain and Palin were such strong opponents of the Reagan and Bush administrations.

quote:

t was time to revive the allegation, made over the weekend, that Obama "pals around" with terrorists, in this case Bill Ayers, late of the Weather Underground. Many independent observers say Palin's allegations are a stretch; Obama served on a Chicago charitable board with Ayers, now an education professor, and has condemned his past activities.

"Now it turns out, one of his earliest supporters is a man named Bill Ayers," Palin said.

"Boooo!" said the crowd.

"And, according to the New York Times, he was a domestic terrorist and part of a group that, quote, 'launched a campaign of bombings that would target the Pentagon and our U.S. Capitol,'" she continued.

"Boooo!" the crowd repeated.

"Kill him!" proposed one man in the audience.

And meanwhile back at the McCain rally...

My translation of his reaction, "Oh my...but hey cool the attack line is working...moving on, moving on..."

nister

Bill Ayers should come forward and set the record straight. Then he should endorse McCain.

al-Qa'bong

Are there any geneticists here?

What I'd like to know is how a country that should have one of the most diversified gene pools on the planet has managed to become populated by what seems to be a nation of inbred, slack-jawed, spittle-chinned yahoos.

Albireo

Um, I hope it's not out of place here to point out that McCain and Palin are themselves "part of a group that, quote, launched a campaign of bombings", etc... That group is called "The Republican Party". Remember how they lied and bullshitted their way into starting a war, with bombings and much much more, and (at least) hundreds of thousands of resulting deaths, and more...

Oh, yeah, well that was OK, because it was for a stated higher cause... um, yeah, well, never mind.

ElizaQ ElizaQ's picture

Woah, there's even more from that Palin rally...

quote:

Worse, Palin's routine attacks on the media have begun to spill into ugliness. In Clearwater, arriving reporters were greeted with shouts and taunts by the crowd of about 3,000. Palin then went on to blame Katie Couric's questions for her "less-than-successful interview with kinda mainstream media." At that, Palin supporters turned on reporters in the press area, waving thunder sticks and shouting abuse. Others hurled obscenities at a camera crew. One Palin supporter shouted a racial epithet at an African American sound man for a network and told him, "Sit down, boy."

I also read that a possible next line of smearing is suggesting that the Obama Campaign is being funded by overseas terrorists and trying to directly tie him into the PLO somehow. They've filed a complaint with the FEC the other day about campaign financing and the Right wing Propoganda outlets have been 'suggesting' things along those lines. On Fox last night Hannity did some 'report' which made a bunch of insinuations along those lines and suggested things like 'his roommate at Harvard was Pakistani' and some unknown Saudi person helped him get in and there's questions about 'who' paid for his schooling blah blah.

Frankly, with Palin basically inciting violence against the media and Obama, and the grave situation down there, it is a powder keg of racial and class tensions that look about ready to blow.

That's exactly what I was thinking yesterday, not only when reading about these rallies but about the 'talk' coming from right wing propoganda world. They are totally pushing he's 'terrorist' muslim sleeper meme and it's kinda scary. If you take a gander at winger discussion world they are eating it up and literally cheering them on. "More, more" I think the worst thing I read was reaction to the whole 'kill him' thing with people proclaiming 'that man is a true American patriot!' and a bunch of other crap

It's not anything at all about 'issues' it's about getting the liberals, beating them down, saving America from the destruction they're wreaking. I read talk about 'civil war', taking it to the streets, doing what we have to do to protect the Republic, being martyrs for the greater good if necessary and a whole bunch of stuff about Palin being a soldier of God and 'doing what we have to do to support her 'bringing the truth and God's justice against the 'liberal' scourge that's sweeping the country into oblivion.

Couple this with the the continued pushing of the the meme that the economic problems are the fault of 'minorities' that got houses they couldn't afford and that the 'bleeding heart socialist, marxist Dems and Obama are the reason for that happening, which is turning into 'common wisdom' in some camps and it's just setting the stage for crap.
The latest meme I've come across which is spreading is resentment of the " racist Blacks" who if early voting is any indication are voting in much larger numbers then before and could have a real effect in the numbers in some key states and you've got another layer of 'hate' and blame.

I knew it was going to be very ugly but this ugly is even blowing away what I had imagined.

If this attempt at character assassination doesn't work or get traction and the polls continue to move in Obamas favour I totally wouldn't be surprised if there's some sort of violent occurrence. I keep reading about how people think that if Obama doesn't get elected there will be race 'liberal' riots in the streets "blah blah." If anything I think the stage is being set for violence and craziness coming from the opposite corner.

quote:

There are other skeletons in the McCain closet which Democratic pundits and bloggers are saying should be brought fully into the spotlight.

They include his friendliness with Gordon Liddy, the former White House operative who spent four and a half years in jail for planning the break-in at the Watergate Hotel. He also plotted to murder a journalist, to kidnap Left-wing protesters and to firebomb the liberal Brookings Institution.

Appearing on Mr Liddy's popular radio show last year, Mr McCain said his host showed "adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great," and said he was "proud" of Mr Liddy and his family. The senator most recently appeared on the show in May.

Senior Democrats have meanwhile pointed to Mr McCain's association with a far-Right private group that supplied aid to rebels trying to overthrow the leftist government of Nicaragua during the Iran-Contra affair.

In the early 1980s Mr McCain sat on the board of the US Council for World Freedom, which was part of an international organisation linked to former Nazi collaborators and ultra-Right-wing death squads in Central America.

I happened to catch on TV this gossip-entertainment show's little bit on it, in which they interviewed the porn star hired to play the lead role. And she actually sounded somewhat intelligent, at least compared to the Sarah Palin clips I've heard lately. That's right: this porn actress is going to have to "dumb it down" to play the role of Palin. Yeesh.

Obama is a liar and yep still palin with that terrorist.

quote:

Palin blamed the media for not providing what she characterized as the same level of scrutiny to Obama that it has applied to her and running mate John McCain.

“I don't see the other ticket being asked to be truthful and give details,” Palin said.

“Some in the mainstream media are saying that, well, we’re taking the gloves off unfairly. No. You know there are only, what, 26 days to go. We gotta start getting answers to these questions that are paramount here so that voters have a choice in front of them that is based on truthfulness and candor. They deserve it.”

The Alaska governor told Ingraham’s listeners that if those questions were being answered, voters would find Obama “out of the mainstream,” adding that the Illinois senator would diminish “the prestige of the United States presidency.”

John McCain is a coward

RFK: Well heck, durn it, if you folks really want to go there I will oblige...

quote:

But if McCarthy-era guilt-by-association is once again a valid political consideration, Palin, it would seem, has more to lose than Obama. Palin, it could be argued, following her own logic, thinks so little of America's perfection that she continues to "pal around" with a man--her husband, actually--who only recently terminated his seven-year membership in the Alaskan Independence Party. Putting plunder above patriotism, the members of this treasonous cabal aim to break our country into pieces and walk away with Alaska's rich federal oil fields and one-fifth of America's land base--an area three-fourths the size of the Civil War Confederacy.

AIP's charter commits the party "to the ultimate independence of Alaska," from the United States which it refers to as "the colonial bureaucracy in Washington." It proclaims Alaska's 1959 induction as a state "as illegal and in violation of the United Nations charter and international law."

AIP's creation was inspired by the rabidly violent anti-Americanism of its founding father Joe Vogler, "I'm an Alaskan, not an American," reads a favorite Vogler quote on AIP's current website, "I've got no use for America or her damned institutions." According to Vogler AIP's central purpose was to drive Alaska's secession from the United States. Alaska, says current Chairwoman Lynette Clark, "should be an independent nation."

Vogler was murdered in 1993 during an illegal sale of plastic explosives that went bad. The prior year, he had renounced his allegiance to the United States explaining that, "The fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for the American government." He cursed the stars and stripes, promising, "I won't be buried under their damned flag...when Alaska is an independent nation they can bring my bones home." Palin has never denounced Vogler or his detestable anti-Americanism.

Palin's husband Todd remained an AIP party member from 1995 to 2002. Sarah can be described in McCarthy-era palaver as a "fellow traveler." While retaining her Republican registration, she attended the AIP's 1994 convention where the party called for a draft constitution to secede from the United States and create an independent nation of Alaska. The McCain Campaign has reluctantly acknowledged that she also attended AIP's 2000 Convention. She apparently found the experience so inspiring that she agreed to give a keynote address at the AIP's 2006 convention and she recorded a video greeting for this year's 2008 convention. In other words, this is not something that happened when she was eight!

So when Palin accuses Barack of "not seeing the same America as you and me," maybe she is referring to an America without Alaska. In any case, isn't it time the media start giving equal time to Palin's buddy list of anti-American bombers and other radical associates?

Growing Concerns.

quote:

John Weaver, John McCain's former top strategist, says the Republican candidate is making both a moral and a a tactical mistake by letting abusive hecklers have free rein at rallies: ------------------------
One of Washington's longest serving political hands expressed bewilderment and fright over the vitriol coming from McCain-Palin rallies, saying that the anger of the crowds could lead to violence.

"One of the most striking things we've seen in the last few day, we have seen it at the Palin rallies and we saw it at the McCain rally today," said David Gergen, appearing on Anderson Cooper 360 Thursday evening. "And we saw it to a considerable degree during the rescue package legislation. There is a free-floating sort of whipping-around anger that could really lead to some violence. And I think we're not far from that."

Joe Klein

quote:

But seriously, folks, I'm beginning to worry about the level of craziness on the Republican side, the over-the-top, stampede-the-crowd statements by everyone from McCain on down, the vehemence of the crowds that McCain and Palin are drawing with people shouting "Kill him" and "He's a terrorist" and "Off with his head."

Watch the tape of the guy screaming, "He's a terrorist!" McCain seems to shudder at that, he rolls his eyes... and I thought for a moment he'd admonish the man. But he didn't. And now he's selling the Ayres non-story full-time. Yes, yes, it's all he has. True enough: he no longer has his honor. But we are on the edge of some real serious craziness here and it would be nice if McCain did the right thing and told his more bloodthirsty supporters to go home and take a cold shower. But McCain hasn't done the right thing all year. His campaign is appalling, as the New York Times editorial board said today--and more, it is a national disgrace.

quote:

There was always going to be a point of revolt and panic for a core group of Americans who believe that Obama simply cannot be president - because he's black or liberal or young or relatively new. This is that point. As the polls suggest a strong victory, the Hannity-Limbaugh-Steyn-O'Reilly base are going into shock and extreme rage. McCain and Palin have decided to stoke this rage, to foment it, to encourage paranoid notions that somehow Obama is a "secret" terrorist or Islamist or foreigner. These are base emotions in both sense of the word.

But they are also very very dangerous. This is a moment of maximal physical danger for the young Democratic nominee. And McCain is playing with fire. If he really wants to put country first, he will attack Obama on his policies - not on these inflammatory, personal, creepy grounds. This is getting close to the atmosphere stoked by the Israeli far right before the assassination of Rabin.

For God's sake, McCain, stop it. For once in this campaign, put your country first.

Josh Marshall

quote:

This is not a laughing matter. So I want to be clear what I was alluding to when I referred to "borderline criminal incitement." John McCain has a first amendment right to smear and (at least free of criminal penalties) slander Barack Obama by suggesting he's in league with terrorists. But as we've seen many times, even offhandedly threatening comments directed at a Secret Service protected individual, can earn you a visit from the guys with the earpieces. And McCain and Palin are now routinely holding rallies in which they whip supporters into such a delirium by castigating Obama as a dangerous terrorist-lover that members of the audience shout what can very reasonably be interpreted as threats against Obama's safety. Am I saying they're breaking the law? No. But I do think they're nudging up against the envelope and getting near that line beyond which, if McCain were not a presidential candidate, his rallies would be getting some attention from those charged with protecting Obama's safety.

Daily Kos

quote:

There's something happening here, and what it is, is all too clear. McCain - Palin rallies over the last few days have disintegrated into festivals of hate, and the two candidates at the center of this are encouraging it.
--------------
And McCain is promising more than anger. He's promising that he will name names. He's promising a new economic black list for Wall Street -- and for Capitol Hill.
-----------------------
"Will you assure us," one woman asked, "that, as president, you will take immediate action to investigate, prosecute and name the names of the people actually responsible?"

"I will," McCain answered.

"The same people that are now claiming credit for this rescue are the same ones that were willing co-conspirators in causing this problem that it is," he said, raising his voice to be heard over the crowd. "You know their names. You will know more of their names."
---------------------------------
Just look at that statement for a moment. Two weeks ago, John McCain suspended his campaign and trotted back to Washington, claiming he had to help shepherd in the bailout agreement. Two days ago he was bragging about it. Yet here he is saying that the people "claiming credit" for this agreement need to be prosecuted.

The language McCain and Palin are using: "radical," "palling around with terrorists," "willing co-conspirators" is growing more heated by the day. It's language that's compounded by the "dangerous" commercials McCain is running across the country. It's the kind of language that you use in describing an enemy in wartime. It's the kind of language that not only excuses violence, but encourages it. More and more it sounds as if McCain has inhaled the ghost of Joseph McCarthy and is exhaling the fevered rancor of Charles Coughlin.

Fox news big scream of the day comes from Jerome Corsi who claims to have emails that prove that Obama has been conspiring with Keyan Rali Odinga and has proof that he is actually Muslim as well as supports the implementation of Sharia law in Kenya.
You don't have to be dense to see that the rhetoric that they are using implies that Obama secretly support that in the US as well.

It's totally and completely nuts. I've been around the internet a lot this am and the Wingers (that's the only word I can think of to describe them are going absolutely bonkers and the only way I can describe it is just total and complete rage)

The other big 'story' is accusation of massive voter fraud where the numbers keep getting escalated, lastest figure...5 million.

They're also trying to blame Obama for the markets falling, suggesting that the traders on Wall Street are 'fearful' of Obama being president.

There's at least a dozen of other crazy smears floating around and now it seems that the anger is growing because the 'liberal' news isn't covering them. The Fox people seem to be really pushing that one.

Meanwhile the polls today show Obama still trending up and some pretty major ones show even greater gains in what may now be formally red states.

Moderate Republican leaders appear to be jumping ship and pulling back from McCain.

quote:

WASHINGTON—At a press conference on Monday, members of the Vietnam Veterans Alliance blasted Democratic nominee Barack Obama for his failure to serve in the Southeast Asian war that ended 33 years ago, alleging that during the conflict the candidate frequently engaged in games of T-ball. "While our boys were dying in Vietnam, Barack Obama was running around a little league field, laughing and having fun without a care in the world," VVA spokesman James Lowry said. "John McCain left his wife and three children behind and fought bravely, but I guess Sen. Obama decided that practicing cursive and learning how to ride a bike was just more important than defending his country in her hour of need. I bet he wasn't even able to point out Vietnam on a map." Lowry later speculated that if Obama had been sent over to fight in the conflict, he probably would have peed his pants and cried for his mommy as soon as he touched down in Saigon.

I swear, it's ridiculous how political conservatives in the USA have used a war that Nixon purposely prolonged for four more years (read the Trial of Henry Kissinger for proof that Nixon and his nasty little creature of a hatchet man conspired with the South Vietnamese to destroy negotiations that would have ended the Vietnam war in 1968), and which was an all-round failure in US cultural history, as a litmus test to destroy their opponents.

quote:

The anger is getting raw at Republican rallies and John McCain is acting to tamp it down. McCain was booed by his own supporters Friday when, in an abrupt switch from raising questions about Barack Obama's character, he described the Democrat as a "decent person and a person that you do not have to be scared of as president of the United States."

A sense of grievance spilling into rage has gripped some GOP events this week as McCain supporters see his presidential campaign lag against Obama. Some in the audience are making it personal, against the Democrat. Shouts of "traitor,""terrorist,""treason,""liar," and even "off with his head" have rung from the crowd at McCain and Sarah Palin rallies, and gone unchallenged by them.

What was that old phrase about trying to get off a tiger once you get on?

Oh yes, be careful lest you be eaten up.

McCain and Palin thought they could tap into racism without being consumed by the ugly aftermath, and they could not.

If ever the world needed more proof that Americans really are stupid and ignorant enough to let themselves be manipulated into displaying the grossest and crassest levels of racism ever seen on public display since the 1950s and 1960s, recent events have served handily.

This video makes me think that what James Carville once said is 100% accurate:

Pennsylvania is two cities with Alabama stuffed between them.

This is one to file under 'you just can't make this 'sh*t up' category.

So we have both McCain and Palin pushing the murky Obama pals around with 'terroristy' type people thusly it speaks on his lack of judgment and character line. It's not in the stump speeches any more but the ads are still running and McCain is being pushed by his base to go after Obama with it in the debate tomorrow evening.

Then this hit the internet tubes today. The chief of McCain's white house transition team was connected was with lobbying for Saddam Hussein while Iraq was considered an official terrorist state by the US. You know the ACTUAL guy that people at their rallies or in the dozens of internet smears going around that try to connect Obama with every time they refer to him as Barack HUSSEIN Obama.

Talk about a big 'ouch' from a PR point of view.
Look forward to the spin on this one. Can you imagine the field day the Repubs would have if Obama hired this guy to lead his Whitehouse team?
