Krystalline Kraus Krystalline Kraus's picture

salut....is anyone from babble (toronto area -- you know, the center of the universe) going to the relanch party this thursday???

oldgoat

Well I'll be there by golly you betcha!

Others are discussing it in this thread.

For those who have been living in a cave, check it out and order tickets here.

Michelle

I want to know too! I'm really looking forward to meeting people!

(And if anyone needs a place to crash overnight if you're from out of town, I've got a spare bed and couch. )

oldgoat

...and once that fills up, I'll be driving by the Park Plaza on the way home and can drop people off.

jrose

And I will also be there!

Michelle

You'll be at the Park Plaza? Hey, big spender!

Maysie Maysie's picture

What? After-party in JRo's suite at the Park Plaza? Kewl! Have a tequila shot for me!

Michelle

I'll have a whole margarita!

Ah, how I wish this were true! More like, party at JRo's one-bedroom apartment in Hamilton, haha.

Michelle

BTW, I'm going to be in charge of the drink tickets tomorrow night. So if you want to meet me, that's where you'll find me for much of the evening!

clersal

I really wish you could have it a little nearer to where I live.

Bah! Skip it!

Kidding, that sounds really great, miles. Congratulations to your friend.

Nobody is talking about how much they will miss this board. I mean, some of us have made a huge emotional investment in these bits and bytes. Talk about dumb, but there it is.

I hope the new software is agreeable ... or I'm going to come back as even more annoying than I already am.

remind remind's picture

have a question, are we going to wake up tomorrow and have to find the new url address for rabble/bable or will these old url links take us straight there?

And nbeltov, your words point out just how resistent to change people are. Familarity is comfort, the unknown is stressful.

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

I expect it may take a while to get used to a new appearance, but as long as it works well without very many bugs, I don't think I'll have a problem. I left another board that switched to a really ugly (to me, anyway) version of phpBB, but it doesn't sound like that is what is about to happen here.

Michelle

You know what? I'm actually not sure whether the new site will be up and running tomorrow.

But I do know that you can just come here to the same URL. babble will stay here until you hear otherwise.

I share N Beltov's feelings on this. I have no answer to what we'll wake up to. There's still little bugs and tweaks, even at this late date.

Not dumb at all. I feel the same way.

Okay, thanks Michelle! Was hoping you would say that, or something like that anyway.

I've got crab apples to jelly, an abundance of garden greens that will need freezing and a honey locust tree across the street that is threatening to go to waste but I'm going to put all that on hold to try and be at the rabble thing.

Bump

'Tis. But is it necessary to reregister? 'Cos I'm trying to log in and it's acting like it doesn't know me.

Pogge, I disabled that link because I'm not sure it's ready to go outside the tiny debugging test group yet. I also think it only works on Firefox for the nonce.

If I'm incorrect I'll fix it.

Check you're PM's

pogge

I went ahead and posted that link because I got it from rabble's front page where there's now a message encouraging us to poke around the beta site.

omg that sit is hot

Lard Tunderin Jeezus Lard Tunderin Jeezus's picture

Kinda cool over there.

I was able to find my very first babble post, made Aug. 31st, 2001:

quote:

I'm one of those notorious 'swing voters'. I've voted Liberal, NDP, PC, and even for Mel Hurtig's National Party once. Haven't voted Green yet, but it's not out of the question (though single issue parties have a harder time getting my attention). I'm probably exactly the kind of voter the 'left' wishes they could depend upon - sympathetic, but all too often just just as likely to end up voting Liberal (to turf a Mulroney or Harris, or block the likes of the Stockboy).

What do I want to see in a new left initiative? First and foremost, I want it to champion democratic reform.

It terrifies me that the ranting right seems to have been able to stake out this turf as their own. Recall, the triple E senate and unlimited campaign spending by single issue special interest groups are among the poisons they're pushing. All of them wrong, but obviously fascinating to a wide range of Canadians.
Alternatives must be presented: the restriction of spending by non-citizens (would we have suffered the economic dislocation of the FTA if corporations had not out-spent individual Canadians 20 to 1?); replacement of our first-past-the-post elections by representative or run-off election; meaningful senate reform (but not in a form that sets it at loggerheads with the House).

In short, a promise that the democratic in New Democratic Party is primary.

Plus зa changer, eh?

My absolute humblest of apologies. I am clearly behind the loop. I fixed your link.

I logged in, and filled out the terms and requirements but, the evrything just stopped for me. I'll try again.

Pogge, you use "pogge" and your password, not your former sign in name.

pogge

Thanks. Already got that figured out. Then I fumbled around for a while 'til I figured out that even though I'm not a new registrant I still have to accept the terms before I'm really logged in. That message needs to be big and bold to get people's attention.

And having sorted all that out, I tried to get to the beta-babble and got a screen full of MySQL error messages. I'm thinking they don't have enough juice to run both the old site and the new one. That's just a hunch, though.

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

I'm still being asked to login, although I've logged in twice, and am getting Drupal error messages.

But you're supposed to know everything. It's in the Moderator's Handbook.

(How do you get behind a loop? )

You using firefox as a browser? As even on dial up, it is very fast and efficient, and I have been having absolutely no problems with using it, over the last few days.

pogge

I'm using Firefox. I also tried Opera and had problems but those may not be Opera - I've since gone back with Firefox and had enough problems that I'm going away again for now.

Don't get me wrong. I know what "beta" means and seeing problems doesn't surprise me. But there appears to be quite a bit to sort out there. I'm glad you've had a good experience but I spent half an hour trying to get to a point where I could post a single comment and then, as I said, got a page full of database errors. I've also had this -- the original forum -- disappear on me a few times.

Ya, me too, I have been getting "cannot display web page" messages, or an inability to post a response too here at the original site. I also have not tried to get into the new site today either though, as I am juggling time and phone/dial up lines.

It's Me D

I looked at the Beta site but it certainly doesn't seem ready to go... I'll wait till we get some formal word to get out of this old site and get with the times...

Anyone know if our post counts and joined dates are to be reset in the new babble?

pogge

Worth bearing in mind but not at all surprising since one of the things being tested is the database functionality (this a highly customized copy of Drupal). If a problem turns up, they'll want to be able to restore a clean copy of the database and it's like restoring from backup. Recent work go poof!

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

I'm still being asked to login or register, although I've logged in twice already. It's also slow to load, maybe there's a lot of traffic today? I think I'll just stick with old babble until the new page is running without problems.

Don't worry, it definitely will!

We're doing the beta version for now so that babblers and other rabble readers can help us fix the bugs. Make good use of that feedback page and tell our techs what isn't working for you so they can fix and tweak!

Alright, I’m heading to the Roundhouse for sound check! (My partner is helping out with sound.) I hope to see some of you there!
