Moving this to the Canadian Politics forum (even though I know it's got some American politics in it too)...
Also, it would be great to have a thread title that reflects the subject of the thread, so that people can find it later when looking for the discussion. Perhaps "election demographics" or something? [img]smile.gif" border="0[/img]

Yes, but why the gratuitously nasty comments about "hard leftists"?
Does she mean some babblers who agreed that her "white trash" commentary was elitist? None of them uttered death or rape threats to her, they simply disagreed with her article.
Or does she have illusions that left groups, whether anarchist, Marxist-Leninist, ecosocialist or whatever, actually put "let's attack Heather Mallick" on their agendas? Somehow I doubt it.
I don't have much use for that crotchety act that sees fit to attack everyone equally. It doesn't make one really want to devote much energy to defend her.
My initial comment on reading her piece was rather ruder, to put it mildly.

Actually ,Lagatta, that was one of my favourite parts of the article. I think it dovetails with Michelle's comments that the Liberal party are often more friendly to newbies than the NDP is.

I won't write in public what my thoughts about Mallick were upon reading that. Let's just say I would be disinclined to take bullets to save her skin.

And what about the Tories? Are they now friendlier or at least as friendly to "newbies" as the Liberals are? (since your criteria seems to be number of votes cast)

Why does Mallick always have to "star" in her own columns? It's always about her, no matter what the subject.
It makes it impossible to write with any objectivity at all.
Another thing, while I'm being crabby: Is it just my browser that causes the CBC's articles to appear in 6-point type? Even the idiotic comments that follow the articles are in bigger print.

M Spector, lots of columnists use the device of talking about their lives and opening out to other questions - but the best do it with a sense of detachment, or irony, also poking fun at their persona. One of my favourites in that respect is La Presse chroniqueur Pierre Foglia.
But Mallick seems intent on pissing people off, even people who might be potential allies. All to show what a very special person she is.

If the Liberals are indeed more open to new people, it's only because their guiding principle is little more than to "put more bums in seats," in all its possible interpretations.

I think the "hard leftist" thing was a sop to right wing readers. Or the Bosses boss at the CBC. "I don't like the left or the right, therefore, I'm fair and balanced." If I was to get my knickers in a knot over it, it would be the insult to my political leanings, but to my intellect.
Really, it's a fairly fluffy piece, and I'm wondering at your visceral reaction to it, lagatta.

Yes, but it makes it impossible to ignore the subjectivity of all texts as well. It's easy to make an autobiographical essay "look" objective.
