Have the Liberals elected Conan O'Brien in Brampton West? I thought I'd have heard about that!

The only one of these that I even remotely expect to see anything really positive from is Oliphant, since he's a gay United Church minister with a half-decent record of social justice work.
Though I do realize that I'm likely to be disappointed...after all, he's a Liberal!

The Liberals could have done a lot worse than Frank Valeriote in Guelph. From a brief meeting with him and intelligence from my sources in Guelph, I think he's fundamentally a decent guy. Also, as he repeatedly talked about the need for progressive voters to stop Harper's agenda, I think he also might be open to becoming another rare Liberal MP that supports PR.

If I count this right from the photos posted here the Liberals have 6 women out of the 13 newly elected and the NDP got 4 women out of there 12 newly elected.
Anyone got any stats on how many of the news Cons and Bloc are female.

Thanks AJ - I found the answer in that thread after I posted the question here.

That was completely unnecessary and I think rather insulting to many of us.

I am quite often disappointed by those of you on the left. You talk a good game, but you are less progressive then those on the right!

1) this is an online forum, all that happens here is talk.
2) what about adma being flippant makes the left un-progressive???
3) even if adma's comment was enough to somehow throw the left's claim to "progressiveness" out the window; why does that make the right more progressive???
I've obviously missed something!

Who said adma was even progressive let alone on the left? And i object to his post as a matter of fact.

The Liberal Party uses an open-list PR system to elect their leader.
Each riding chooses 12 delegates, who must vote for the leadership candidate they were pledged to at the Delegate Selection Meeting. If 8% of the membership in that riding vote for Ruby Dhalla, she gets one delegate. If several people stood for delegate as Dhalla supporters, the one who got the most personal votes is her delegate from that riding.
Just like any PR open-list system.
Now, in the recent election the Liberals elected only six MPs from Ontario outside the GTA, while the NDP elected 15. Hmm, the Liberals need PR even worse than the NDP does. And they already use it.
If it's good enough for Liberals, isn't it good enough for all of us?

7 out of 14 are women. Good for the Libs.
+ Justin Trudeau and Marc Garneau. Quite a strong team.

From the GTA, Montreal and Newfoundland, yes.
In the other 80% of Canada, the Liberals elected no new MPs, and lost a number of strong MPs (Robert Thibault who did such a good job on Mulroney/Schreiber; Karen Redman; Sue Barnes; Raymond Simard; Raymond Chan; Roger Valley; Charles Hubbard; Paul Zed; Andrew Telegdi; Diane Marleau; John Maloney; Tina Keeper; Don Bell; Ken Boshcoff; and a few lesser known, plus a few in the GTA like Garth Turner, Bonnie Brown and Susan Kadis.
And in Ontario outside the GTA, Quebec off Montreal island, all of the West, and even in New Brunswick, Liberal voters elected fewer MPs that their share of the vote justified.
As noted above, Liberals now need PR. Some have noticed. Others will figure it out soon, as they start voting for leader in a PR election.

I wouldn't call any of these "strong MPs".

14 new MPs who support slashing corporate tax rates, drawing out the war in Afghanistan, no-strings-attached bailouts for the banks, and voting with Harper.
Hmm.

Actually, Bonnie Brown was pretty good. She was quite anti-war.
Someone thought these pictures were so nice they preserved this thread --- twice???
