Harper to fill Vacant Senate Seats Before New Year

As a non-partisan voter, I believe in the value of the Senate and the
Governor-General to balance the powers of the House of Commons and the
Prime Minister.

I  agree with Harper recommending Senators to the GG to balance the Senate, according to the Constitution.

However, I do not agree with the appointments being made by the GG
until it is clear that Harper has regained the confidence of the House.

Because of the current crisis in the House, created by Harper's folly
of the 'economic update', Canadians are becoming more knowledgeable
about our system of governance and why it includes the GG and the
Senate. If the GG is intended to have powers to protect Canadians from
'rogue' governments, now is the time to prove to Canadians that the
power continues to exist.

The already cynical populace needs some assurance that a PM cannot just
lose confidence of the House, prorogue parliament, and continue to
exercise all of his powers and more: That is a dictatorship.

I believe it is essential that the GG insist that Harper regain the
confidence of the House before his recommendations for the Senate
appointments can be approved by the GG.

I would add  ... Harper has 18 appts to make, which still means a Liberal majority in the Senate (58-38).

"get rewarded with a lifelong senate appointment"

These appointment are for 8 years only - all new appointments agreed to this.

The appointment of Richard Neufeld here in BC I think is a bit of a surprise although he does represent the northern part of the Province. Wonder who will take over as Energy Minister.

Nancy Greene's name had been mentioned - hard to call her a party hack since she has never held political office.

I think the big surprise in BC was the non appointment of John Reynolds

Have they signed an agreement to that effect?  And if so, is it even binding?  The Constitution is the supreme law and it says terms are for life or until 75 years.   Not to mention the very clear conflict of interest that comes from senators taking the orders from the House of Commons/PM - supposed to be independent, sobre second thought, no?

ETA - I think the only way to ensure that a senator retires/steps down after 8 years is to appoint one when s/he is 67.

Politics101

" The Constitution is the supreme law and it says terms are for life or until 75 years.

Not 100% true - you can resign your Senate seat if you wish before 75 and this has been done in the past.

Summer

well duh, of course you are not forcing anyone to stay on.  Judges and senators retire due to illness for example.

What I'm wondering is what happens after 8 years if someone doesn't resign.  Can the government force them to (based on breach of contract?).  I would guess that  they cannot and that any contract or agreement will be null and void. A lot can happen in 8 years.  I predict that on December 22, 2016 most, if not all, of the 18 appointments will say that they are doing hard work for the good of Canadian people and would like to stay on until the age of 75 to continue to do so.

Politics, both Neufeld and Greene are publicly known as Conservatives.  The surprise I would agree is that a failed candidate, very clearly muzzled during the election, was chosen over Reynolds.  Then again he is getting long in the tooth.

Politics101

Has anyone checked to see just how old these appointees will be in 8 year's time - Duffy must be getting up there.

martin dufresne

Now, I understand why Harper threatened over the weekend to abolish the Senate if he couldn't reform it... to offset the media impact of partisan nominations before an election he might well lose.

oldgoat

Just came into the office and turned on the computer.  MIKE FUCKING DUFFY!?!?!  Ok, I just checked, and it's not some Canadian version of The Onion I've logged into.  Like WTF!

Where's Frank Magazine when you need them?  I guess all those years of toadying and brown nosing have paid off bigtime.

This is a tagline. It has nothing to do with the comments posted above. Just a tagline...really. Please disregard.

NOTHING. There is no way short of amending the constitution that senators can be made to resign short of when they turn 75. Period. Its a joke.

Summer

Yes.  Agreed.  One thing that makes me happy is that the joke's on Harper and he knows it.  He has flip-flopped again.  He couldn't get his triple E senate and then he appointed senators even though he said he wouldn't.  I know his base has no other party to vote for but still this must not make them happy with him

So Harper wants to cut public funding for political parties. And at the same time he puts Conservative Party fundraiser Irving Gerstein on the public payroll as a Senator.

Can you spell HYPOCRISY?

madmax

Ah, I like the spin, that they had to appoint these Senators now because if the "coalition" took office, they could appoint Separtists to the Senate, and then Harper does just that.

Appoints a Separtist who worked for the YES side.

Too bad the LPC/NDP have no ability to get their messages out. It is all Harper all the time, and the public is buying every CPC spin put forward.

Jack Layton is taking the rap for doing things he hasn't done, and Harper is getting away with doing the things he threatens that Jack Layton could do.

I find this hilarious.

Re Yonah Martin: maybe the Tories feel they need their own Mobina Jaffer.

Re Wallin: definitely more Mulroneyite (i.e. the sort to ally with Lewis Lapham types) as "Tory Senators" go.  (Which reminds me: where's the Mulroneyites?  Where's Michael Wilson?  The only Mulroney-era MP appointed is a Quebec obscurity...)

Tommy_Paine

Duffy's appointment is cause for consternation.

I mean, how robust are Bolivian lamposts?

Maxx

During the 2006 election campaign, I had a feeling Duffy was "campaigning" for a Senate seat when he lashed out at a Liberal strategist live.  Then during the last campaign, he was the first to release the infamous Dion tape.  ("If you were PM now, what would you have done about the economy and this crisis that Mr. Harper has not done?" )

It's all coming together now...

Bubbles

It would be interesting to know if there were any that declined the offer of a senate seat from Harper. It seems somewhat questionable to accept this kind of public service position from someone that suspended our democracy. I did not think Duffy would have any pangs of guilt, but that Wallin accepted I find somewhat disappointing.

The constitution overrules any "promises made with pinky fingers" - senators for life or age 75, or leaving on their steed. They have also made other promises or pledges to servitude to heir Harper (so much for independent thought as a selection criteria) such as uphold Canadian unity and be against the coalition. What the ???

I really think that fascist Harper would like to remake Canada into a Republic so we can have 2 houses and make the upper house like the US - stronger than the House of Commons. Soon he will try to rejig parliament so we elect a pres (for life???).

Anyway, I sure hope doesn't get into bed with Harper and by propping up this guys budget give free give away credibility.

Anybody notice that no prominent MSM commission a opinion poll on Harper appointing 18 party hacks to senate while we are on standby?Nope, didn't think so?

I guess they don't want public opinion on this? I wonder why?

Yonah Kim Martin is a stronger advocate for BC's Korean-Canadian community than I would have guessed. Although she was a Conservative candidate in 2008, back in 2004 she was appealing for votes for the Liberal candidate who ran against James Moore, Kwangyul Peck:

Quote:
Currently, in certain electoral ridings of Vancouver, Burnaby and particularly Coquitlam, there are large concentrations of Korean-Canadians. We now have the potential to make an impact with our collective voice. At all levels of politics – municipal, provincial or federal – the Korean community is an ethnic group that can affect change. The politicians know this. They also know that the Korean community in the Lower Mainland does not yet have elected representatives in any levels of government.

What does this mean?

We are in a perfect position. A position of power. The power to show that the Korean vote can make a difference in an election.

Kwangyul Peck is the only Korean candidate in this federal election. Fortunately, he is running in Coquitlam which is densely populated with Koreans. Each Korean-Canadian citizen, 18 years or older, now has the power to send this Korean representative to Ottawa. By his very presence in Parliament, he will amplify our collective voice – farther than we could shout it at the top of our lungs from our community rooftops.

In other ridings, each Korean-Canadian can vote for the candidate who will be a good secondary representative, a person who is empathetic and understanding of the immigrant experience. A candidate who is willing to embrace the Korean community as his/her own. These open-minded individuals can be perfect advocates for our community.

As Korean-Canadians, casting our ballot lets us speak our own minds. As individuals. As a community. Let our collective voice be heard all the way across this vast country – all the way to Ottawa.

Sigh - no gravy train for me.

On the bright side, Saskatchewan now has a Senate delegation which is 2/3 women.

The promise to resign in 8 years was only made by 17 of the 18.  Corner Gas bit player Pammy Wallin (who steals a chocolate bar in season 1) agreed to resign sooner - and offer herself as a candidate when Saskatchewan holds a Senate election.  None of these 18 promises is enforceable.

The most laughable appointment is Yonah Martin, the defeated conservative candidate in New Westminster Coquitlam Port Moody. Now everyone out in Babble land might be saying.. Yonah Who? And you wouldnt be too far from the mark. Her performance during the campaign was well... horrible.  She finished a strong second only because the Liberal vote in the riding totally collapsed into the Conservative vote. But face to face in debates etc, she was totally lost and really looked clueless. In terms of qualifications for the Senate.... other than being a teacher and a co founder of "Korean Canadian" group called C3.... she's done nothing at all on a national, provincial or civic level to warrant this consideration. Perhaps Harper was looking at her Korean Canadian heritage and looked to make history with these pork barrell appointments.

Ms. Martin is 43 years old. She puts a 4 million dollar dent into the taxpayers wallet over the course of her Senate tenure not too mention the expenses. Then of course there's the pension. The question is, is she going to continue her teaching career, and become a career senator, or is she going to sidle up to the trough and eat from it whole heartedly. The proper thing to do, in my opinion and based on how much she says she likes teaching is to tell Harper to piss off.  But I doubt that she will.  On a side note, the one surprise to me was that Robert Fife, CTV resident Conservative lickspiddle and bootlick wasnt paid off. But his work isn't done I suppose.

No doubt on the evening news tonight, Ol' Bob will be giddy with joy at his hero Duffer and Pam Wallin going in. Too bad Bob, gotta pick up more paycheques by trying to look like you work for a living. Though maybe Harper might be looking for a press secretary or something.
