Israel is a foolish country, according to senior Hamas leader Dr. Mahmoud Zahar. He offered this diagnosis in an interview with Haaretz at his home at the end of November, in response to a question about the fate of the prisoner swap.

Planning, organization, self-control and order - these characterized this week's mass rally held by Hamas in Gaza and reflect the organization's modus operandi, both open and concealed. Neither force nor bribery spurred the masses to celebrate the 21st anniversary of the movement's founding. The very large number of women who participated also demonstrated the widespread support Hamas has garnered, despite Israel's assassinations of its leaders, which may even have helped Hamas.

Quote:
If I were a Palestinian, watching Jews in Israel and around the world preparing to celebrate Hanukkah, I might be a bit confused. The holiday recalls a time, way back in the second century BCE, when Judea was ruled by a much stronger neighboring nation. The Jews took up arms to free themselves from a military occupation. Yet when Palestinians even talk about taking up arms against the occupying army of their powerful neighbor today, the Israeli government and its supporters call that unjustified, immoral, an outrage. And the government of the United States generally agrees, no matter which party is in power....

So if I were Palestinian, I might well ask: Why should Jews celebrate their own violence of 22 centuries ago as a morally justified fight for freedom, yet refuse to see the morality of the Palestinians' fight for freedom? Isn't there a double standard at work here?

A growing number of Jews think so. They don't approve of Palestinian violence. But they want to see Israel extend the same right of self-determination to Palestinians that it celebrates for Jews every year at Hanukkah.

Some of these Jews for peace and justice are Israeli high school seniors who are refusing to serve in their own army. In Hebrew they're known as "shministim." They see their army imposing the same kind of repressive occupation that their own people suffered centuries ago, and they won't be part of it. They say that a military occupation cannot be the path to peace or to security, as the Seleucids found out long ago. Many who refuse to serve know that decision will land them in jail. Some are in jail right now.

One of them, Omer Goldman, wrote this:

Quote:
Earlier this year, I went to a peace demonstration in Palestine. I had always been told that the Israeli army was there to defend me, but during that demonstration Israeli soldiers opened fire on me and my friends with rubber bullets and tear-gas grenades. I was shocked and scared. I saw the truth. I saw the reality. I saw for the first time that the most dangerous thing in Palestine is the Israeli soldiers, the very people who are supposed to be on my side. When I came back to Israel, I knew I had changed. And so, I have joined with a number of other young people who are refusing to serve.

Thursday, December 18, is an international day of solidarity with the imprisoned "shministim." You can read about them, and lend your support if you want, at www.december18th.org.
Ira Chernus

A MAN was asked about his sons. “I have three,” he said, “but one of them is a complete idiot.”

“Which one?” they asked.

“Take your pick,” he replied.

In 51 days, we shall vote for a new Knesset and a new government.

Three big parties are competing for the prize: Kadima, Likud and Labor.

From there on, see the joke.

Each day of electricity cuts increases the prospect that Palestinian Water Authority engineer Saadi Ali's nightmare will come true. Ali, in charge of the North Gaza Emergency Sewage Treatment Project, lives in constant fear of a recurrence of the calamity that took place in March 2007 when the dirt embankments surrounding a temporary infiltration pond of sewage water collapsed, and the effluent water that flooded the nearby Bedouin village of Umm al-Nasser led to the drowning deaths of five people. About 1,000 people were evacuated from their homes, animals died and considerable damage was caused to property and crops.

“Gush Shalom” has acceded to my wish to mark my 85th birthday not with a public celebration, as on my 80th, but with a brain-storming session devoted to the main issues concerning Israel.

At 3:19 P.M. Sunday, the sound of an incoming missile could be heard over the telephone. And then another, along with the children's cries of fear. In Gaza City's Tel al-Hawa neighborhood, high-rise apartment buildings are crowded close together, with dozens of children in every building, hundreds in every block.

This isn't the time to speak of ethics, but of precise intelligence. Whoever gave the instructions to send 100 of our planes, piloted by the best of our boys, to bomb and strafe enemy targets in Gaza is familiar with the many schools adjacent to those targets - especially police stations. He also knew that at exactly 11:30 A.M. on Saturday, during the surprise assault on the enemy, all the children of the Strip would be in the streets - half just having finished the morning shift at school, the others en route to the afternoon shift.

Three hours after the Israel Defense Forces began their ground operation in the Gaza Strip, at about 10:30 P.M. Saturday night, a shell or missile hit the house owned by Hussein al A'aiedy and his brothers. Twenty-one people live in the isolated house, located in an agricultural area east of Gaza City's Zeitoun neighborhood. Five of them were wounded in the strike: Two women in their eighties (his mother and aunt), his 14-year-old son, his 13-year-old niece and his 10-year-old nephew.

Wounded Gaza family lay bleeding for 20 hours

Defense Minister Ehud Barak (the Hebrew surname means "lightning," German "Blitz") did it again: a historic record of over 200 Palestinians killed in a single Sabbath's blitz (Dec. 27). Polls now predict five additional Knesset seats for his Labor Party in the coming February general election. That's 40 Palestinian corpses per seat. No wonder he promises it's just the beginning: at this pace, it will take Labor just about two thousand additional corpses to go from rags to riches, from a dead political party to an absolute majority in parliament like in the good old days. For Barak, then, the Gaza obituaries are a matter of political survival: they are pasted up on his party's obituary. A similar sickening logic sent former Prime Minister Shimon Peres (Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, etc., etc.) back in 1996 to devastate southern Lebanon and solve the problem of Hezbollah once-and-for-all in Operation Grapes of Wrath, just weeks before the general election – in which he was defeated by Netanyahu. When the so-called doves behave like hawks, the voters prefer the real hawks, following the Talmudic saying "Whatever looks like an egg, a true egg is always better." But warriors like Barak never learn.

Am I the only one who finds Alan Hart creepy?  I know he says things that I agree with, but  I can't help but feel that there is somthing greasy and underhanded  about the man.  He constantly editoralizes, refers to the world Jewish community as though it is monolithic(who says that no Jew will listen to an anti Israel gentile?) and I get the impression he is slightly anti semitic.  Am I being unfair?

Between 600,000 and 700,000 Gazans have no water, some of them going on a week.

About one million have no electricity, raw sewage is running in the streets in some places and various localities, especially in the northern Gaza Strip, face the threat of sewer backups.

Just a thought.

Why not stop the indiscriminate rockets and suicide bombings of Israelis.  Maybe that will stop the tanks and missiles into Gaza.

Someone explain to me how sending 2000 plus rockets a year into Israel does not justify retaliation?  Violence begets violence.

Hamas needs to stop the rockets and suicide bombers and stopped importing weapons.  Lead by example.

We have heard, and we will continue to hear, a droning litany of
"Qassams! Qassams! Qassams!" The repetition will be difficult to
resist, but for all of us who remember the reiterated US lies about
Iraq of 2002-2003, whether with pride for our skepticism or shame for
our credulity, a good first step might be for us to think "WMDs!" every
time they say "Qassams!" Like the US Coalition of the Willing, Israel's
Operation Cast Lead has not let the absence of actual provocation get
in the way of a good bloodbath. Indeed, chronology itself proves no
obstacle, as Israeli commandos, Apaches and F-16s retaliate for rocket
attacks that haven't occurred yet. In the immortal, influential and
profoundly depraved words of neoliberal crusader Michael Ignatieff,
"Against this kind of enemy ... it makes sense to get our retaliation
in first."
