Man savagely beaten in apparent vigilante attack

And they took pictures:

Quote:

Winnipeg police continue to investigate a possible case of
vigilantism in which New Year's Eve revellers are supposed to have
beaten a man who was allegedly trying to break into vehicles in St.
Boniface.

Police were called to Horace Street in St. Boniface just before 2 a.m. last Thursday to investigate a report of an assault.

When officers arrived, they found several men on the street,
including one man who appeared to have been assaulted, said Const.
Jacqueline Chaput.

Someone at the scene took photographs which were posted to a
Winnipeg-based website, WinnipegHeights.com. The photos, later taken
down from the site, show a bloodied man, wearing a T-shirt and jeans,
curled up on the snowy ground.

From the CBC.

Star Spangled C...

Wasn't there some sort of anti-aboriginal racist component as well? I was in Quebec over teh holidays and caught this on the news and the website had something about "us - 1. indian car thief - 0."

Winnipeg is known for it's general hatred of FN people. I lived there, saw it, and saw its effects on FN people.

There was, though I don't know the details except what I heard on the radio (and I tuned in part way through the interview). The webmaster of the website in question was saying how he'd banned the person who posted the pictures, as well as some people who'd made racist comments in response.

When people feel besieged this is the sort of thing that happens.

A friend of mine has just returned from a 2 week stay in his old 'hood- Winterpeg-said crime was out-of-control with gangs running large parts of the city and the police unable to deal with it in any way.

Well, if one's main source of information was the Winnipeg Sun, one would indeed get the impression that crime is "out of control". Sure, it's higher than in a lot of Canadian cities, but crime, and especially property crime, is declining significantly, according to this. Crime makes great copy though, which is why that charming paper devotes so much space to it. The result is that people get that "beseiged" feeling of which you speak, regardless of justification.

old_bolshie

I'm not talking about the newspaper I'm talking about friends/relatives who are feeling beseiged-like two cars stolen in 18 months-what's next-it was the owners faul for flaunting wealth?

If you read the CBC story I linked to, you'd have noticed that car thefts have fallen 45% in the last year or so. Yes, cars get stolen. A few years back my parents had one stolen from their backyard. Were they annoyed? Sure. But they're not panicking, or scared to go anywhere. The people who are are mostly the ones who read the Sun and listen to CJOB.

It would have been one thing if they caught him stealing cars and simply held him down until the police arrived. Beating him up that way is over the line, not to mention what happens if they get the wrong person.

People become frustrated when the same criminals keep repeating after going throught revolving door criminal non-justice system.  I do not condone the behavior, but can understand why they did it.

In my little area of the world, the little creep stole three cars and destroyed them while he was on probation and out on bail for a previous vehicle theft.  The owners now have to foot the bill for the deductable and fight with the insurance company for a replacement.  The little creep laughs all the way out the court house again.

Whats the solution?

Stargazer

He's laughing to the court house? Oh...yes, people generally laugh on their way to the court house.

Babble clientelle is getting rather ...trollish.

The thief couldn't have been too badly beaten if he walked away unaided.

Vigilante-style beatings should be saved for scabs.

Like, yeah, it's not a good and true beating if the person isn't permanently harmed. FFS!

I'm not impressed with this level of lefty discourse. I can read shit like this in any comments section of any online news source, there's a reason I choose not to and come to rabble.

I'm guessing that in this particular case the Crown would arge that stiffer sentences and possibly some jail time would be in order here.

If you're interested in long-term solutions, there is much documentation available regarding what works and what doesn't.
