William Ayers denied entry to Canada

William Ayers was set to speak at a U of T's Centre for Urban Schooling, but his appearance has been temporarily cancelled.

Quote:

Jeffrey Kugler, executive director of the Centre for Urban Schooling, is deeply disappointed in the turn of events. For him it's a question of academic freedom. "It's kind of ironic the day before Barack Obama is going to become president this is what the Canadian border security has done," said Kugler. "It seems ridiculous that one university can't have a professor from another university to come and give a lecture on an important educational topic."

Kugler waited for five hours at the Toronto Island airport for Ayers. He was with a lawyer, but the border guard refused to allow Ayers to see the lawyer.

"The entire four or five hours he was not allowed to have representation at all. To me this is an issue of academic freedom. He could not be a threat to anyone ever. Anyone who knows anything about this man – he's a distinguished scholar at the University of Illinois and he has been involved in education reform over the past 15 years. To imagine in any way he was a threat to Canada is really absurd."

And some people still believe Canada will accept Khadr back or help Canadian citizens out of Gaza?

It's shameful, in any case.

Restricting travel is one of the primary techniquest used by totalitarian regimes.  Restricted travel was one of the hallmarks of Nazi Germany.

I would expect Canada to deny entry to Khalid Sheikh Mohammad, one of the alleged plotters of 9-11.

However, to restrict travel for Ayers has nothing to do with national security.  Freedom of speech (or not), and freedom of travel.

I wouldn't say Canada is totalitarian.  Just that they're following America & Israel's lead in the so-called "War on/of Terror" a little too closely.

Utterly disgraceful.

Although it's not quite analgous to the recent CUPE proposal, government as opposed to university, ban as opposed to boycott, preventing people from participating in academic forums because of their political views always is a danger to academic freedom.

I was thinking the same think Josh.

Interesting that he flew in on Porter to the island airport.

I agree.  This is the danger in going down that road.

However, there's a huge difference between people, or even groups of people, voluntarily boycotting something, and a government suppressing speech through the power of the state.
