Obama picks Big Pharma shill for Surgeon General

Quote:
What do you suppose Barack Obama would have in mind, to chose a Big Pharma / medical industry / insurance interest / media shill to be the American people’s health care ombudsman?

Were you among those hoping that Candidate Obama was going to bring health care reform, instead of seeking out a second opinion to say we’re all doing just fine?

In 2003 Sanjay Gupta was an embed in Iraq for Chrissakes, reassuring American viewers that our boys were receiving celebrity care and that Hippocratic attentions were being paid to Iraqi wounded too. Did that turn out to be true? CNN embed Gupta was a propagandist! It requires what scruples to do that? Maybe Obama should pick Geraldo for FCC chair. How about Ollie North for Military Industry Czar?

More recently Gupta was the chief critic of Michael Moore’s health care documentary SICKO. Gupta led the corporate media charge to discredit Moore’s scathing assessment of the corrupt US medical system. Ask yourself, pray tell with what arguments could Gupta raise to redeem today’s pitiable state of affairs?

No surprise, Pricko Gupta has also proven to be an outspoken advocate of Gardasil, the tragically flawed inoculation being foisted upon our nation’s young girls.

To call Dr. Sanjay Gupta a quack would do disservice to chiropractors. He’s in a league with Republican Bill Frist. Take two bitter pills and call me an asshole in the morning.

Say it isn’t so - Sanjay Gupta as the next Surgeon General. At a time when 18,000 of us die every year from lack of access to health care, we need a champion to go up against the Congress and the insurance company lobbyists. We don’t need someone in a white coat with a stethoscope around his neck. We do not need someone who can do brain surgery. We do need someone who will fight for those who need brain surgery.

Doctor Gupta has a history of siding with the status quo. That is the opposite of what is needed. We need access to health care for everyone — pure and simple. Nothing less will do. This is not nuclear physics or brain surgery. It is politics.

M. Spector, I'm not sure about this blog.

Israeli massacres 800 Palestinians. World looks the other way, just as they did when Hitler was massacring the Jews. I thought we promised, “Never Again”.

Besides, Gardasil is not a "tragically flawed" innoculation.

He hasn't been selected yet.

Very true, and I think it makes the original source look very suspect.  I expect the Surgeon General to look at the evidence, not just parrot conspiracy theories.

I don't know much about Gupta so I can't comment.  But my personal choice for Surgeon General would be 1) Gregory House (too bad he is a fictional character) 2) Steven Novella 3) Joycelyn Elders (the former Clinton Surgeon General who lost her job for speaking common sense)

CNN' s Suze Orman has been nominated as the new Commerce Secretary, marking the second time in a week that a high visibility correspondent from the all-news network was tapped for a post in the Obama administration.

"Suze is a great choice," said incoming White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel. "She is a natural to provide the office's prime directive, to to foster, promote, and develop the foreign and domestic commerce. And even better, she's from Chicago."

just one of the...

If Gupta is chosen it then it should be the final nail in the myth that we can look forward to any real insurance reform in the next 4 years since it proven he is on the take from insurance

I think it's funny how the criticism is always leveled at "Big Pharma"...as though it would be better to find someone from "Little Pharma".

It's hard to believe that the ‘Change We Can Believe In' candidate could have morphed into the ‘Are You Kidding Me' man before he was even inaugurated. It usually takes a little longer before we catch on to the fact that we have been hoodwinked by yet another amateur.

Obama's early choices for cabinet positions and other posts were questionable from the start. What is Hillary ‘We'll Obliterate Them' Clinton doing as the designee for Secretary of State? Why is pit bull Rahm Emanuel the new chief of staff? Why would a ‘change' administration keep holdovers from the Bush years?

But, as events are now showing, worse choices were yet to come.

The nomination of a CNN lightweight still in his 30's to be the top doctor in the U.S. simultaneously insults professionals in the fields of medicine and public health. It demonstrates a shallow understanding of important issues by the new man in charge and his posse that is unnerving.

Sanjay Gupta was probably the only medical spokesman the bunch had ever heard of because he appears on TV. It's a leap to believe that on-air exposure makes Gupta an expert at something besides reading a teleprompter. The transition team would barely have had to scratch the surface to find respected, knowledgeable and experienced professionals who could handle the job without a back-up editorial team or pancake makeup.

You can almost visualize the thought process that went into his selection: The transition team is sitting around discussing possible appointees for surgeon general. None of them know personally any public health leader. CNN is playing in the background and a presentable looking young man begins a segment on health care. Of course! Make him the top doc! We're probably lucky they weren't watching Scrubs.

Oh man, I didn't see this at the time!  Dr. Sanjay Gupta??  Hahaha!

It was fun watching Michael Moore eviscerate Gupta during the publicity over Sicko. :D

Seriously though - what is Obama thinking!?
