The Uncertain Business of Doing Good: Outsiders in Africa

Join veteran journalist and documentary filmmaker Larry Krotz for a fascinating discussion on the social and ethical implications of conducting humanitarian aid projects in Africa, from the Angolan civil war, to the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, to AIDS research in Kenya.Over the past 15 years, Larry Krotz has travelled to a number of African countries, where he produced the documentary film, Searching for Hawa’s Secret, and wrote extensively for magazines and newspapers on scientific research and foreign aid projects "A very engaging read ... Whether you are a scientist, student intern, international aid worker or traveller, the book forces one to ask: Who benefits?"

The book below, published last year, goes into great detail about these issues, from the perspective of a Canadian woman who worked in development overseas for many years, and spent 11 years in Zambia.

Title: Desire for Development: Whiteness, Gender and the Helping Initiative by Barbara Heron.

Larry Krotz did a similar talk in Winnipeg last September. You can download an audio podcast of it [url=http://www.thinairwinnipeg.ca/events/larry-krotz-aid-in-africa][color=me...

Who comes to mind is Amy Biehl.  She was a Stanford student on some humanitarian mission in South Africa, in the "early post-apartheid" era.  She was in the wrong place at the wrong time and was beat to death in quite a gruesome fashion (knives, machetes, etc.)

I guess when you're in a foreign land (in some cases), you need to stay near your supporting organization & not wander off on your own.

Somehow I doubt that's what Larry Krotz is going to be talking about.
