America the Religious? Or "Alabamians Like Iranians"?
An interesting set of Gallup polls over the last several years sheds some interesting light on the relative importance that religion plays in the lives of citizens of various countries.
Turns out that, on average, Americans tend to place, well, an average amount of importance on religion (relative to other countries).
Also interesting, but much less surprising, was the variance of views about religion within America (Gallup equated Alabama with Iran and Connecticut with Austria). And, the Land O' Palin? It's one of the least religious states in the Union (I'm both surprised and not surprised at that).

In Alaska, the right wing of the Republican Party has been driven by an obsession with resource extraction(the opening of the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve, or ANWR, to oil exploration is the third rail of Alaska politics. You can't win a statewide race here and oppose opening ANWR) instead of social conservatism. This is why Our Sarah made her fall campaign slogan "drill baby, drill!". She's just as hardcore on the socon issues, but she knows she'd lose the state if she made her gaybashing and fetusfeshishing concerns the center of her electoral appearances.
The last vote on banning gay marriage only passed in the state by 53%-47%, And no statewide antiabortion initiative has ever been approved here.

My sense about Alaska is that it's relatively libertarian (both economically and socially).

Well, the initiative results I mentioned would bear that out.
