After 9 year old Brazilian girl is raped, outraged archbishop vows to excommunicate...those who helped her get an abortion

Way to focus on the real issue there, archbish.

Presumably you've already given absolution to the rapists.

Ken Burch

From the article:

"It is alleged that she had been sexually assaulted over a number of years by her stepfather.

The excommunication applies to the child's mother and the doctors involved in the procedure."

Quote:
He said the excommunication would not apply to the child because of her age, but would affect all those who ensured the abortion was carried out.

That's age discrimination! It would never be allowed here.

The Catholic Church should do the world a favour and excommunicate everyone. Then it could be given a decent burial.

But Nazinger has figured out that that means negative growth. Bad. So he's resuscitating the heretics, including the overt Nazis.

I think this Brazilian archbishop will be getting a sharply worded message from Its Holiness shortly: "Don't kick anyone out without guaranteeing two recruits in exchange. Remember what St. Barnum and St. Bailey said: there's one born every minute!"

Star Spangled C...

This is fucking sick.

Also, wow. This seems like the youngest case of a girl getting pregnant that I've ever heard about. 9 years old is very young to start menstrating.

Ghislaine

Disgusting. Although, as unionist implied, he probably would have done the girl a favour by excommunicating her.

There is not why that this girl's body could withstand pregnancy and labour.

The skewed priorities are disgusting - where is the statement about the rapist incestual monster?

Michelle

I doubt they'll excommunicate the father.  Heck, maybe they'll ordain him!  He'd fit in nicely with all the other pedophiles they've sheltered and protected over the years.

Absolutely right. Doesn't the catholic church allow exceptions in abortion where it is to save the life of the mother? If this girl were forced to go through labour, I'd say there would be a VERY high risk of serious complication and injury that could put her life in severe jeopardy. That's my medical opinion.

Ghislaine

Ha!  Or with those that deny the Holocaust, Michelle. Class-acts all around.

oops.. I meant to write "no way", rather than not why. I think the Catholic church's position is irrelevant. They are probably happy that the incestual rapist a-hole did not use an evil condom.

RosaL

Since I have defended "religion" elsewhere, I think I need to say this: This makes me sick. And it makes me angry.

Michelle

Hey RosaL, I'm pretty sure no one thinks you'd ever condone anything like this, no matter what you've discussed about religion elsewhere, don't worry.  Defending religion, or being religious yourself, doesn't mean supporting decisions like this one.  I'll bet there are a hell of a lot of Catholics who are also absolutely horrified at this story, and the decisions that the idiots who run their church make.

And I know from personal experience that there are a lot of church-going, religious people who try to bring about progressive change to their denominations from within.

RosaL

Thanks Smile

Unionist

Yeah, exactly what Michelle said.

One of the worst crimes of these religious "leaders" is that ordinary people of faith get tarred with their sins. I've never met a Catholic worker who could rival the Pope in backwardness, let alone this Brazilian crook.

The same slanders are hurled at Muslims, when terrorists and Saudi royals and the like are paraded around as "Muslim". And likewise with Jews, when they are identified with Israel.

Ken Burch

I agree with unionist and Michelle as well, Rosa.

What's happened in this situation has nothing to do with Christianity, and little to do with Catholicism(the Church actually accepts abortion for victims of rape and incest).

It's about patriarchy gone twisted and murderous.

Well, if it excommunicated everyone, that would mean it had also excommunicated all the clergy, meaning no one could preside over the requiem mass and the Church could not be buried on consecrated ground, thus consigning it to spend its institutional afterlife in limbo.

Or...was that what you were actually going for?Laughing

Well done, Ken, that's exactly what I was going for. But that Ratzinger saw it coming and outsmarted me by !! It's like chess, dealing with these characters. Back to the drawing board...

Michelle

Those diagonal moves'll get you every time. :)

The incidious drip drip drip of the removal of women's rights, the tool being again the religions of world.

Of course the pedophile prick's so called 'sins' were given absolution, that is the hallmark of Christianity. Christians can sin, which is really committing crimes against others, with impunity, because you are automatically "forgiven", because some dude was alleged to have died on the cross for them, before you ever committed them.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch:

Church settles Texan abuse claims

Quote:
The Roman Catholic Church in Texas has reached a settlement worth $775,000 (£545,000) with five people who alleged they had been abused by priests. [...]

In 2006, the diocese settled with 11 men who said they had been abused by James Reilly when they were altar boys. The men received at least $1m (£705,000) each and payment for one year of counselling.

My, these Catholics have tonnes of $$$ with which to finance their abuse of children. You'd think some people would think twice when the collection plate goes by.

And hey, doesn't Texas have the death penalty? Oh, silly me, that's only for African Americans and the poor and the disabled.

Star Spangled C...

Yes, but the catholic church is actually against the death penalty which I'll give them credit for. They've taken a lot of decent stands whether against capital punishment, agains the war in iraq, in favour of forgiving third world debt. But every time they pull some disgusting shit like with this girl in Brazil or they help some child-raping priest avoid justice, it just makes people ignore the good and only see the evil. Time for them to clean house and become a decent, positive force in the world.

Huh?

edit:  Please do your defending of the catholic church elsewhere.

Star Spangled C...

Don't tell me what to do, RevolutionPlease. People are entitled to their opinions. Mine is that the catholic church has a lot of good and a lot of bad and needs to focus on the good. hardly a controversial sentiment. Nor really what msot could  call "defending" particualrly when coming from someone who isn't catholic or any sort of christian.

RevolutionPlease RevolutionPlease's picture

I'm baptised Catholic, was indoctrinated as an award winning altar boy and was steered toward the seminary.  I know all I need to know.

This is the feminism forum and a thread about disgusting abuses by people representing the catholic church.

What I can't take is saying "focus on the good".  I call BS.  The focus must be on the bad, every infinitesimal bit of it until it's gone.   Then I'll check if there's any good they do.

Sorry sisters for butting in.

Michelle

Hey guys, honestly I think you're probably both coming from the same place when it comes to this particular story.  This is the kind of story that makes me clench my teeth and see red with rage.

But I didn't get the impression that SSC was trying to give the Catholic Church a pass on this one...what he's saying is similar to what I said above, actually, that there can be good people (and even some good ideas) in organized religion.

I totally see where you're coming from, RP.  Lapsed Baptist here, so I can relate to being bitter about the regressive things my former religion stands for, and the particular regressive things that made me lose my faith and leave.  But I don't know, I also feel like I have to recognize the good and progressive people and movements within my former church who are trying to change things for the better from within.

Seems to me that's what SSC is calling for as well.  I didn't see him saying "let's focus on the good stuff the Catholic Church does instead of the bad."  I see him saying that the Catholic Church should get rid of these regressive stands and stick with just the good stuff they stand for.

Michelle

Don't be sorry for "butting in".  This story is an outrage.  Which makes us feel, well, rage. :)  It's not butting in to express that.

RevolutionPlease RevolutionPlease's picture

Sorry SSC, I reacted too strongly.  I don't post in here much out of respect to our sisters unless I want to ask questions.

But what I read was a weak admission of fault surrounded by opening and closing statements painting the church in a positive light.

I would ignore it anywhere else.  To me there should be no room for that in light of the thread topic we're posting in.  Just me.  There are plenty of topics around to defend catholics in.

Sorry sisters for butting in.

RevolutionPlease RevolutionPlease's picture

Thanks Michelle, I just try to be very aware that I do not know enough about feminism to comment here often.  It is definitely the rage with this story.

President Lula - Suck it, Catholic Church!

Just about, anyway.

Michelle

Good for Lula.  I notice that in this article they also don't mention whether the Catholic Church is going to sanction the stepfather in any way.

But of course they won't.  As was said above, he was good and obviously didn't use contraception when he was raping the child, according to God's will.  They're probably dismayed that he's subject to the laws of Brazil instead of "God's Law" which would decree that he be ordained and moved to a new parish so he could have a new flock of children to victimize now that his child raping has been made public in his current community.

Unionist

The Pope and his gang show their true anti-human colours - again:

Quote:
A Vatican cleric is defending a Brazilian archbishop's decision to excommunicate several doctors who performed an abortion last week on a nine-year-old girl who became pregnant with twins after alleged sexual abuse by her step-father.

It's not all bad news, though. The stepfather who raped the nine-year-old is still a member in good standing of the Church:

Quote:
Upon learning of the abortion, the regional archbishop excommunicated the doctors, as well as the girl's mother. He did not excommunicate the step-father, saying the crime he is alleged to have committed, although deplorable, was not as bad as ending a fetus's life.

Time for this Church to be consigned to the dustbin of history.

Michelle

Wow, raping a child repeatedly for years UP UNTIL she is 9 isn't as bad as having an abortion.

Sick people.

RevolutionPlease RevolutionPlease's picture

And people wonder why I rage at religion's defence.  All these good things they do are also done by secular, spiritual people who don't condone things like this.  Makes no sense to me.

You betcha, and that catholics around the world are not up in arms about this makes them just as sick!

katra

first off no offence to any catholics who read this.

this really pisses me off, from what i understand a 9 year old girl was raped, is pregnant with twins and if she tries to give brith she could die. and to save her they gotta abort but the church doesnt want to. this just seems plain crazy to me, if they dont she could die. so this 9 year old girl was raped, and there trying to give her the death sentace by not aborting, is she the vicitim or the criminal here?

and another thing who the hell is the church to have any right to say in the life and health of a 9 year old girl who was raped? and even if she did have the babies some how, what the hell was she going to do with them? and the church is gonna kick out the family and doctor for saving a rape victims life? thats genius. also wtf have they kicked out the rapiest??

ennir

Once again the Catholic Church demonstrates that maintaining fear and control is their true intent.  I don't see it changing as it appears so many want just that and even those who don't continue to support it.  I wonder how anyone can do that.

Rexdale_Punjabi Rexdale_Punjabi's picture

Only words I have for this is u hear 9 but a lot of ppl dont realize how young that is. No matter what ur still too young to understand what's happening go look at a 9 year old child that grade 4. N just think about what happened.

MegB

The Catholic Church and the basic tenets of christianity parted ways centuries ago, if indeed they were ever anything more than distant cousins.  Pronouncements like the ones from this particular archbishop and the current Pope only serve to reinforce the fact that the church itself has little to do with the spirituality of its members.  It is obscenely corrupt, repressive, sexist, facist, racist, homophobic and morally bankrupt.

Situations like this make me wish that hell existed as an actual place of eternal punishment.  Then I could rest easy in the knowledge that these unholy pricks would be doing a swan dive into the old sulphur pond upon the end of their evil, miserable lives.  Unfortunately, reality being what it is, they will continue to enjoy the rich rewards of being who and what they are.
