One of the things I've spent the last few years doing is becoming an Aggie (student & practitioner of farming.)
One of the people I've learned the most from is a total amateur, a man who helped start a community garden in SF. He helped turn a sand dune covered with ice-plant into a fertile 1 1/2 acre oasis with some killer soil, using compost & sweat, in the '70's. That community garden is still going strong today.
One of the other people who's helped me a lot is a non-amateur, a retired Berkeley soil scientist that runs a facility that takes in 300+ tons of yard waste a day and uses hot composting to turn it into some of the best dirt in the world.
Good scientists are where you find them.
