KIDNEYS and livers from aborted foetuses could be given to the desperately ill and ease the donor shortage, a scientist has claimed.
Prof Sir Richard Gardner, an Oxford University stem-cell expert, said foetal tissues might offer a more realistic solution to the lack of organs than other technologies being developed.
Calling for studies into the feasibility of transplanting foetal organs, Sir Richard, an adviser to Britain's fertility transplant watchdog and the Royal Society, said he was surprised the possibility had not been considered.
He said that experiments in mice had shown that foetal kidneys grew extremely quickly when transplanted to adult animals.
Sir Richard said: "It is probably a more realistic technique in dealing with the shortage of kidney donors than others."
But he said much research would be needed to show such transplants were effective.
I think the decision should be up to the woman and her written consent should be required.
I find it strange that the article did not mention this aspect - that it is assumed that the woman's consent would not be required for use of her own foetus?
